The former for example produced a three-piece tea-service in the typical Kutch-style with lizard handles. On that example, however, the insulators run through the legs of the lizard rather than through the body as on the present example (from the collection of Harish K Patel, see https://silverfromindia1850-1920.blogspot.com/p/indian-silver-from-kutch-gujarat.html). Raghavji also uses the same motif on a drawing for a two-handled cup and cover which also includes similar animal scenes to those here, which are a recurring theme in the work of both Mawjee silversmiths. The catalogue entry for the model notes that the original was ‘… literally a miniature version of the 36-gun frigate `Pique’ as designed by the Chief Surveyor of the Navy, Sir William Symonds. It was built to the order of King William IV for the use of the royal princes on Virginia Water as a yacht and for sail training.’ As commemorated in the engraved inscription on the present service the ship was built at Sheerness in 1834 by John Fincham. Measuring some 50 feet in length it has to be taken apart and reassembled on Virginia Water where it was re-launched in the presence of the Royal family. Among the surviving sections of the ship is the figurehead which is now at the National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth and the cannon which were donated by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, to Cowes Castle.With non-transferable standard ivory exemption declaration number W6RD2BQ7.Each piece fully marked underneath. Three soldiers; China, Mig Dynasty, AD 1368-1644.Terracotta with engobes and Sankai glaze.It is in a good state of preservation.Measurements: 24 x 9 x 6 cm (x3).Set of three soldiers destined for a funerary trousseau, all of them made in terracotta with engobes and Sankai glaze. This style, whose name literally means 'three colours', is based on the use of two glazes or lead glazes, copper-oxide green and iron-honey, complemented by the ivory-coloured engobe of the base. These types of grave goods, both figurines and vessels, were called 'mingqi' ('shiny object'). The Ming dynasty is one of the longest periods in Chinese history, lasting approximately three centuries. After the Yuan period of foreign domination, the Ming period saw the re-establishment of traditional Chinese values. The seventeen emperors of this dynasty reigned in a state of relative peace and prosperity and belonged to the Han ethnic group (the majority in China), as did the civil service. The economy was transformed from an agrarian to a fully mercantile state at the end of the dynasty.
