A Victorian walnut mercury stick barometer. V. Somalvico and Co., London, circa 1860. The arched bevel-glazed canted twin vernier ivory scales calibrated in barometric inches, with the usual observations and labelled 10 A.M. YESTERDAY and 10 A.M. TODAY beneath signature V. SOMALVICO & Co., LONDON to upper margin, the rectangular section trunk with twin vernier adjustment discs to throat and figured veneers above ogee moulded turned cistern cover to the rounded base with level adjustment square to underside, 92cm (36ins) high. Vincent Somalvico and Co. are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from 14 Charles Street, Hatton Garden, London 1856-8.
A Victorian small two-day marine chronometer. Charles Frodsham, London, circa 1840. The four pillar full-plate chain fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensation weights and faceted diamond endstone, the movement with brass dust cover, the 3.5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with blued steel hands, subsidiary seconds and power reserve dials, and inscribed CHARLES FRODSHAM, 7 Pavement, Finsbury Squ,r, London No. 1825 to centre, now set in a lacquered brass bowl with screw-down bezel mounted within pivoted gimbals with locking screw, now in a mahogany three-section case with push-button clasp for top tier above inset ivory panel inscribed 1825 and cartouche shaped brass key escutcheon, the sides with replaced carrying handles (movement lacking detent and with other faults and alterations throughout), 16cm (6.25ins) wide. Charles Frodsham was born in 1810, he set up business at 7 Finsbury Pavement prior to 1842 before succeeding John Roger Arnold at 84 Strand in 1843. He was succeeded by his son, H.M. Frodsham in 1871. The firm became a Limited Company in 1893 and are still trading today.
A Japanese sectional ivory large okimono of a farmer and two children, Meiji period, the man pausing with his rake to be offered a branch of fruit by the boy at his side, while the smaller child emerges from the basket on the man`s back, height approx 38cm, together with a carved wood stand.
A Chinese archaistic jade carving, probably late 19th/early 20th Century, modelled as three goats huddled beneath a misty moon, the stone of grey/green tone with brown inclusions, on a matching lingzhi carved wooden base, length approx 14cm, together with two Japanese carved ivory figures (faults).
A Japanese shibayama tusk vase on stand, Meiji period, the ivory tusk incised and inlaid with two pheasants perched in a blossom tree opposing two birds flying above flowers, worked in various coloured mother-of-pearl, hardstones and tortoiseshell, inlaid signature plaque, beneath a silver mounted rim, the carved and pierced wood stand with foliate apron on four scroll legs and flat platform base, total height approx 63cm (minor losses and silver rim re-glued).
An exceptional Chinese Canton export ware brisé fan, mid-19th Century, the ivory guards carved in high relief with figures in ornamental gardens above dense flowers, the fourteen sticks similarly pierced and carved in low relief, the paper panel painted to one side with exotic birds and butterflies in a profuse ground of predominantly pink flowers again a gold ground, the other side with a superb military scene of gunners, infantry, swordsmen and cavalry drawn up before a fortified cliff, the garments worked in multicoloured collage and finely painted faces, length approx 30cm, the gilt metal mount with cord suspending a carved and pierced ivory figural bead and tasselled terminal, together with a lacquer fitted case with similarly decorated hinge lid interior.
A Japanese carved ivory okimono figure group of Makamala, Meiji period, the three faced, six armed deity holding various weapons, standing on the back of a wild boar above a seated figure, incised black stained three character signature and red seal mark to base, height approx 34cm (base broken in two and other minor faults).
