An Ivory Slide Rule Period 1870 Purpose of use: Alcohol calculation and barrel gauging. The ruler has scales for calculating alcoholic content and various shapes of cask. Maker: L. Oertling 1818-1893 The ivory rule has no chips or dings and is clearly engraved. The end ferules are German Nichol silver. The rule has two sliders with makers name engraved on lower edge and gauging scales on upper edge. Mr Ludwig Oertling is famous for inventing the"Improved Assay Balance" which was the prototype for numerous generations of Oertling assay balances which are used to this day in most laboratories.
