A good Chinese embroidered silk pelmet19th CenturyOf horizontal aspect and worked in blue and ivory shaded threads against a black ground with phoenix birds amid flowers and rockwork, accompanied by bats and flanked by two inscriptions, the border above with further flowers and bats arranged around a 'double joy' symbol.FOOTNOTE:The symbolism of good fortune and double joy in the motifs of this panel suggest that it was a wedding gift and may have been part of the pelmet for a bed.
