Lot 4000

A Light and Airy Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, the guards and gorge decorated in bronze in a linear design. The double cream silk leaf complements this approach, with vertical bands, alternating painted pink roses and green leaves with embroidered and intertwined green and gold sequins. To the top and sides, a gold chainstitch embroidered outline undulates as a border and passes down through the painted flowers, this adding to the shimmer as the gold catches the light. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 25.5cm, Together with A fan leaf with a design of 18th century Lords and Ladies at a ball, uncut, unsigned, undated, printed onto lightweight cream silk. The ladies, grandly dressed in elaborate robes, ruched and tucked and décoletée, carry open folding fans. The gentlemen, in long patterned coats and plain breeches, wear curled wigs. Depth of leaf measured at the centre approx. 5.1/8 inches or 13cm. Span from bottom right corner to bottom left approx. 17 inches or 43cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Fan 1 - wear to the silk mainly on the verso, and lower edge, best seen from the verso. Some splitting to the folds on the verso but the recto appears strong. Wear to the bottom left prevents the fan from closing cleanly.Fan 2 - as new and clean.

Lot 4002

An Early Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on plain, slender ivory sticks, with mother of pearl thumb guards. The print depicts a rural scene, close to a river, a carriage with three horses and driver approaching a gate or tollhouse, en route to an estate with church that can been seen in the distance. The verso is plain. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm. Together with a carved and pierced bone (?) fan, circa 1860's, mounted with a cream silk satin leaf printed with a gentle courting scene, a maid carrying what could be a wool skein being shown attention by a country lad in striped socks and colourful waistcoat. The verso is plain. Shaped metal loop fitted with a slender cream silk tassel. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Fan 1 - monture slightly warped, two holes in the leaf to the left, generally quite grubby, foxing seen from the verso.Fan 2 - A small repair to the mid/upper section of the upper guard. Missing the top edge border in places. Seen from the verso, staining to the top edge and sides, some wear to the backing fabric on the lower border.

Lot 4003

A Very Dainty and Pretty 18th Century Peephole Fan, the monture of ivory, carved and pierced, pink foil laid behind the carving on the upper guards, the gorge with a central cartouche of two musicians, bordered with intricate scrolling and floral features. The double cream silk leaf, featuring an upper border of peepholes filled with fine net, is painted with bold and colourful garlands of roses, forget-me-nots, tiny buds and leaves, the reserves embroidered with tiny gold sequins CONDITION REPORT: . Clean, strong, nothing adverse note

Lot 4004

A First Half of the 18th Century Carved Ivory Fan, the monture with figures to the guards and gorge. The paper leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows the return of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15, 11-32), the parable in the Bible where a father welcomes the return of his younger son despite him having squandered his inheritance, simply thankful for his return. The verso is simply painted with a landscape. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Issues with the join of ribs to gorge sticks, in that one is loose, one stick is missing, and others have been re-secured clumsily in the past. The rivet is too tight, probably due to the addition of the loop, and the fan is stiff to open.

Lot 4005

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan with a particularly ornate gorge, the monture carved and pierced with painted panels to the upper guards. The gorge sticks are resplendent with gilding, the carving radiating from the centre, and the outermost sticks and bottom edge providing a formal border. Within this border, a large central cartouche shows a courting couple, with another couple within ovals to the reserves. Amidst this colourful painting are smaller ovals painted with rural scenes. A rectangle bottom left shows a windmill, and one to the right depicts a harbour scene. The leaf presents a gentle pastoral scene of friends and family gathering flowers in the countryside, a courting couple to the right, a child with his dog. To each side, a vignette of golden flowers on a turquoise background. The verso is painted with a similar scene, a couple resting, having gathered flowers. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm CONDITION REPORT: . The upper guard lacks most of the painted section, a replacement section of plain ivory having been inserted, below which the next section is broken, which is causing the guard to bend. At this point there is a tear in the leaf. The first fold in at each side has a tear to the top.

Lot 4006

L'Amitié Fraternelle: A Late-18th Century Ivory Fan with a double paper leaf, the recto portraying a charming image of a mother, father, small children and their nursemaid, the fan title being written just under this touching scene. Two small vignettes show a lady at rest in the outdoors, her small dog attempting to draw her attention, and a young boy fishing at the riverside, bringing in his catch. The verso is plain. The ivory monture is carved and pierced, and coloured quite strongly where the design features circle and swirls (which also show the carving when the closed fan is laid on the side). The central cartouche and the guards feature figures, and trophies of love including musical instruments. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Some small repairs to the gorge sticks, seen from the verso. Repair to the lower guard near the shoulder and the leaf beside this has a fold split. Some of the folds have been well restored at some time in the past.

Lot 4007

The Proposal: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, cheerful in bright blues and pink against the cream monture, with daintily painted and shaped sticks, supports a double paper leaf, the background in powder blue. A central cartouche of a gentleman wearing blue and pink, down on one knee before his lady, also wearing pink and blue, is complemented by reserves of large pink, white and lighter blue flowers. The verso is relatively plain with just a sketch of a building and surrounding trees. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Two pinholes to the upper right side, slightly grubby verso. A chip missing from the ivory on the lower section of the lower guard. An odd nick to the upper border but essentially the leaf is crisp.

Lot 4008

An Attractive Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the monture intricately carved and pierced and painted, the gorge noticeably decorated with figures and a trompe l'oeil of white bobbin lace on a blue background. The vellum leaf is painted in pastels with a gentle scene of 18th century courtship, several couples strolling through apart, one lady listening to a piper, seated next to an elaborate stone carving of cherubs above a fountain. The verso is simply painted with a seated lady watching a cherub in flight. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good for age, a small brown mark above the piper's head, several such marks on the verso which do not come through to the recto. Some loss to the backing MOP on the gorge. Unusual to find trompe l'oeil on the gorge, more often found painted on the leaf.

Lot 4009

An 18th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, the two guards and twenty five inner sticks attractively painted with a scene of two 18th century couples picnicking in style by the river, a table covered in green cloth beside them, one lady occupied with a musical instrument and a musician leaning against a tree to the left, a spotted dog attempting to gain his attention. The guards and gorge are painted with chinoiserie, the central gold cartouche complementing the gold border around the scene. The verso shows the outline of the recto scene, the gorge with chinoiserie in subdued colours. Tortoiseshell thumb guards. Green silk ribbon. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm CONDITION REPORT: . the paint is rubbed on the guards, and in places on the main body of the fan. Edges of the inner sticks have small losses here and there. When closed, the upper guard is seen to be somewhat warped. Ribbon sound.

Lot 4012

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the ivory guards deeply carved with scrolls and flowers, the gorge sticks featuring two panels, each with chinoiserie figures and drooping trees. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted with delicate sprays of various English wild flowers and leaves, namely the dog rose, auricula, daisies, roses and buds, cornflowers and the pasque flower. The verso is equally well painted with a full-blown pink rose, and buds, a rope supporting four more varieties of spring flowers. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together with a second ivory fan, a very slender 18th century example, the upper guards delicately carved with shells, the lower section plain but carved and shaped so as to present an interesting stepped design when closed. The plain cream silk (?) leaf is edged in silver. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Both very good, clean.

Lot 4014

A Pretty Mid-18th Century Cabriolet Fan, the slender monture plain ivory, the gorge and mid-leaf panel shaped to show the carving when closed. The upper band of the double paper leaf is painted with a lady out for a drive in her horse-drawn cabriolet carriage (the cabriolet, a one-horse carriage, being in use from 1755). To the left, a lady in gold highlighted robe carries an elaborate parasol, and gazes across to the right where her beau, in fine 18th century long waistcoat, coat and breeches, returns her gaze, his sword at his side. The lower, narrower band, is painted with flowers, a river bank and a grand house with towers. The verso is painted in pastels with simple rural scenes. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good for age. Several leaf folds are slightly torn at the top with a small section of paper lacking at the centre. To the left, the leaf has one fold split in the middle and a crude repair has been effected from behind.

Lot 4015

A View of Saint Peter's in Rome: An 18th Century Carved and Pierced Grand Tour Ivory Fan, the monture carved with a lattice and meandering roses, the gorge sticks in pairs. The painted recto shows a wide-angled view of St peter's square in Rome, the artist recording miniscule details of buildings, fountains, horse-drawn carriages, and passers-by. The verso is painted with a rural Italianate stone building with archway leading to a courtyard. Contained in a 19th century cream card Duvelleroy fan box. Guard length 11 inches or 28cmSee page 186 of the tome by G Wooliscroft Rhead for a framed fan leaf with an almost identical scene, stated as probably being by J. Goupy CONDITION REPORT: . Some slivers of ivory lacking in the two central gorge sticks and upper guards. Some rubbing to some folds, a water mark top left of centre, some wear to the leaf very bottom left, behind which a repair has been undertaken. Some light brown marks to the verso.

Lot 4016

Grand Tour Fan, circa 1776, (note date to right hand side of leaf), depicting the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius by day in the central panel and by night in the smaller panel to the right. Between these two scenes is a poem in Italian. To the left, a musical score accompanies a verse in Italian. The double skin leaf, mounted on ivory, has a trompe l'oeil design of a striped ribbon, which is repeated on the verso, surrounding a closer image of Vesuvius. The carved guards both feature the same chinoiserie figure and carving that features on the gorge. Contained in a pale pink 18th century card fan tube, onto which is written "The ??? painted with ???gold by Sir J Reynolds". Guard length 28cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is loose but present, and has torn the underside of the leaf, with evidence of a previous attempt to re-secure. The undersides of both guards have a plain ivory panel, which are not matching, suggesting a period replacement to one. The leaf is generally rubbed on the folds, with tiny slits to the top of several folds, but all writing is clear. The verso is grubby, slightly foxed and rubbed, with further tiny tears.

Lot 4020

An 18th Century Carved Ivory Chinese Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, the tips of the guards reduced in length to fit a circa 1860's lithographed double paper leaf. The recto shows a gathering of young ladies and two suitors, the deep reserves resplendent with gold scrollwork and two small detailed vignettes with rural buildings. The verso features a similar decoration of gold on white, this time with birds, columns and decorative urns. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . as noted, the guards have been reduced.

First parasol is strong, no splitting, some slight rust marking here and there, very useable. Hard to determine the date of the second parasol but unlikely to be present day with the ivory. The shaft is perhaps a little weak as cotton thread has been wound around the middle section.
