Lot 5211

Circa 1870's, A Japanese Fan, Ogi, Meiji Period, the ivory monture simple, the gorge sticks of bamboo with scalloped edges, with shibayama inlay in the form of insects to the guards, five each side. The double paper leaf, striking in gold, has a number of figures painted to the recto, alone or in groups, in colourful and detailed costume, undertaking daily activities. To the left of the leaf, characters and a red stamp. The verso, with red stamp to the top left, presents a very colourful bird with long tail amidst a profusion of bright exotic flowers, in orange, shades of pink, and white. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm.. Generally good.

Lot 5212

A Late 19th Century Japanese Fan, Ogi, the monture of ivory, painted with various colours of lacquer, and inset with shibayama. Featuring wisteria, birds, insects and further foliage, perhaps lilies, the guards are exquisitely worked. The gorge sticks are plain but simply shaped. Embossed detail to the white metal loop. The double paper leaf is painted to the recto with a tranquil scene of cranes by a riverbank and in the water, their depiction very detailed and elegant. Slender, stylised trees fill the background and are supplemented by various floral species in soft pink mid blue and white. The verso is painted with large blousy peonies, and hydrangea, in pastel shades of pink, blue and white. A butterfly and moth approach. Accompanied by a tan wood fan box with characters written on the outside. Together with A Very Vibrantly Presented Late 19th Century Japanese Paper Fan, the leaf mounted on rounded dark wood sticks. The recto is painted in strong orange with autumn leaves contrasting colourfully with a part gold background. The verso, with a dull red background and touch of gold, features spring blossom in light shades of white and pink. Guard length approx. 11.75 inches or 29cm (2). Quite extensive damage to the leaf at both sides on the shibayama fan. The floral fan has some rubbed folds.

Lot 5212A

A Good Japanese Folding Fan, Ogi, circa 1870's, Meiji period, with ivory monture, the guards decorated with gold lacquer, featuring birds and insects among floral stems, and inset with shibayama, with white mother-of-pearl flowers and berries in coral. The plain gorge sticks are gently serrated at each side. The double paper leaf depicts a hunting scene, one hunter seated on a horse bedecked with red skirts, a hawk or other bird of prey held ready to release. Slightly ahead, his beater, with a white dog. The rural background, with local habitation, ends with mountain ranges. Gold borders to the top and bottom of the leaf. The verso features a pair of birds pecking for food in the bushes beside a river, the male much larger than his mate, with long tail feathers. A large hydrangea bush and smaller plant with pink flowers attract insects. Fitted with a bi-colour silk cord ending in a large double silk tassel, both in shades of cream and deep purple. Guard length approx. 10 5/8 inches or 27cm.. Sound, some rubbing to the folds and general foxing to the paper.

A Good, Large Late 19th Century Japanese Ivory Fan, Ogi, the gorge plain but the guards with unusual shibayama inlays, and gold lacquer work, being a pair of cranes and several insects, a ladybird, a spider, a flowering tree, and butterflies. Floral/foliage etching to the white metal loop, ivory ojime, double cream silk tassel. The recto is painted with a winter scene with light snow, a landscape with meandering river, stylised trees and many birds on the water or in flight. The leaf is edged top and bottom in gold. In contrast the verso speaks of summer, with a yellow background painted with delicate flowers in light blue and pink, and touches of yellow, salmon and red amongst leaves. The shibayama is similar to the recto but includes a dragonfly, black and a red beetle. Guard length approx. 15.75 inches or 40cm.. Slight wear noted to the bottom right of the leaf on the verso. Missing top shibayama inlay on the recto.

A Late 19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan, the double leaf mounted on carved and pierced wood sticks, the guards with figures and foliage and the gorge with a simple regular design. To the recto, a domestic scene, the figures with applied silk costumes and ivory faces. To the verso, a central indoor scene, the main characters wearing ornate robes, with many more figures seated or assembling outside. In good general order

A Quantity of Incomplete Chinese Fans, suitable for repair materials, to include seven incomplete carved ivory brisés plus one of lacquered wood, an early painted Chinese brisé, two18th century montures for folding fans, another for a 19th century example, a part multi-coloured monture, a bag containing parts of a cabriolet fan, two incomplete 19th century fans, a mixed bag of brisé sticks of various dates and three guard sticks of different patterns (qty).. A useful lot for the restorer.

A Chinese Hand Screen or Fixed Fan (Pien Mein) of blue satin, woven with a design of scrolls and a brush pot containing a closed fan and brushes. Handle of bamboo, with ivory finial and salmon coloured silk tassel. Overall height 15 inches, or 37.5cms and maximum width 10.75 inches, 27cm.. Good.

Lot 5226

A Large Asymmetrical Chinese Lacquer Fan, the monture of wood well painted in black lacquer with gold detail, each guard with a figure, the elongated gorge featuring five more figures and a small building within a garden. Both sides are similar but one has a floral border, the other features butterflies. The double paper leaf, dark in shade, features to one side a pink bird, perched on a slender bough covered with pink flowers, smaller birds, this central feature being bordered with further pink flowers and leaves. A similar scene on the verso includes insects amongst the flowers. Together with A Mandarin Fan, the double paper leaf illustrated with domestic or familial scenes, some figures playing a ball game, others holding fixed and folding fans, and on one side, what appears to be a dog kennel. Applied ivory faces. Mounted on wood sticks lacquered in black and painted in gold, the designs slightly different to the norm, with bands of flowers and feathers (2). The first fan is quite subdued and has some rubbing to the leaf folds. The verso with flowers has damage to the leaf. The Mandarin fan has splits and some loss to the leaf. Rubbing to most folds.

A Boxed Chinese Canton Carved Sandalwood Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, circa 1840's, the monture with deeply carved guards and shaped shoulders, the double paper leaf painted to one side with colourful exotic birds and flowers against a gold background (typical of Macau), the verso showing the gathering of many, their robes of applied silk, many wearing Imperial yellow, their faces applied and painted ivory. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm. Contained in a hinged black lacquer, fitted fan box, the interior of rose pink, the exterior with gold detail showing two robed figures outside a gated garden. . Has some issues. Two of the bulbous wood shoulders lack small sections; the leaf is rubbed on the folds, with slight loss to the lower border and some nicks to the top border.

A Very Elegant Early 19th Century Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, with twenty-three inner sticks and two guards. The guards, gorge and stick tips are carved, the tips with swags and pendulant flowers, the main body of the fan with borders of Greek key designs, and a band of flower heads. Just beneath the ribbon, a small oval cartouche is carved with entwined initials ''MC''. The verso is uncarved. Guard length approx. 6.25 inches or 16cm.. Very fine carving. Some small dark marks to the ivory. Ribbon sound.

Lot 5232

A Circa 1840's Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, the twenty-one inner sticks and two guards with rounded tips. A small colourful painted picture of a seated shepherd is central to the recto, the verso panel being painted and entwined initials. The carving is particularly complex. The tips are carved from each end inwards, with intertwined foliage, the next sticks feature figures, with a dragon to the centre. Below the ribbon, the sticks feature crustaceans and insects. The main body of the fan features an elder, seated to the centre, with other figures, large buildings and stylised trees. The verso is uncarved. Guard length approx. 7 inches or 18cm.. The ribbon is defective in one place.

Lot 5233

A Circa 1840's Chinese Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, the double paper leaf mounted on black lacquer sticks, painted in gold, the gorge sticks each with a figure, the guards with the addition of a butterfly, both with a silver metal thumb guard. Both sides of the leaf feature figures with applied silk robes and painted ivory faces, many holding fans, some appearing to be visiting dignitaries and carrying gifts. Contained in a fitted black lacquer box, decorated in gold, the exterior lid with three figures and stylised foliage. The lid interior is painted in colours with fish, scrolls, and flowers. Blue lining. Guard length 11 inches of 28cm. Previously sold by Gorringes, 16th November 1999, lot 284.. The monture is sound and clean, the leaf has slight rubbing to the folds and a fair amount of splitting to the upper folds. Chip to the corner of the box lid. The hinges are present but broken.

Lot 5236

A Mid-18th Century Chinese Fan with Carved Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, the guards carved in sections on a minute scale, mainly with flowers. The gorge is carved in bands of different designs in geometric fashion. The double paper leaf, découpé, is painted with very naturalistic flowers in good colour, to include sunflowers, pansies, roses and daisies, poppies, ranunculi, and a passionflower, with butterflies arriving from the left. The verso is painted in a similar fashion with moths, heartsease, honeysuckle and soft fruits. Bears a previous auction label dated 21st October 1970. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan With Chinese Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, figures and buildings on the guards and a very stylised and geometric design in bands and columns, a central oval with entwined initials. The light cream leaf is painted with pink roses, grapevines with fruit, and swags of flowers of the hedgerow. The upper leaf sections are embroidered with tiny silver sequins. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Third 18th Century Ivory Fan, with birds and flowers carved to the upper guards, the gorge with regular carved and pierced design formed by seven shaped and pierced bands. The double leaf features an outdoor gathering in Chinoiserie style, a meeting of generations, with an elderly man at rest, holding a large fixed fan and perhaps a scroll, watching a younger man contemplating a board game, seated at a low table with stylised porcelain flower vase. To the right, perhaps his wife, with two young children, the lady with fixed fan in hand. To the far right, a crane partaking of the orange fruits of a bush on rocky outcrop. The verso is painted with a simple gnarled tree with several colourful blooms. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (3) . The first fan upper guard is slightly warped. Losses and tears to some of the découpage. The second fan has 4 major splits to the leaf, all holding, some by virtue of some restoration seen on the verso. The third fan lacks the tip of the upper guard. Fan three has a crisp leaf but some repairs to the bottom left corner. The upper guard is fitted with an old white metal repair plate at the shoulder. Above that, another break is holding with glue. The upper section of the lower guard has an un-repaired break.

A Large 19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan with carved ivory monture, and fitted box. The guards are deeply carved, the gorge sticks less so. The double paper leaf shows scenes of leisure and social gatherings, some with indoor water features, the figures dressed in applied silk robes, with applied painted ivory faces. Fitted with a slim double silk tassel in ruby and lilac. The fitted fan box is lined in blue, the inner lid with silk panel painted with vibrant peonies, butterflies and soft fruits, with a central label for ''Sunshing, Hong Kong''. The black lacquer box, shaped, is painted in gold with foliage to the sides, and people and shrubs in the outdoors. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with Another Carved Ivory Fan, similar, but fitted with a much later European replacement leaf with Japanese designs. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Much Later Chinese Fan, the gauze leaf embroidered with flowers in white, with two birds and a butterfly approaching. Guard length approx. 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (3). The monture is clean and sound. The folds are rubbed in places and some short splits are noted to the top border. The box is a little battered, with many chips to the lacquer, and the hinges are defective. The catch does however work. The second fan has a broken guard, section present. The leaf is defective and damaged. The third fan has a break at the bottom of one guard and a section of one gorge stick, although present, has broken away.

Lot 5238

A Good Carved Ivory Chinese Fan with finely embroidered cream silk leaf, the gorge sticks plain, each guard carved from the tip to mid stick with a gnarled tree covered in flowering blossom and hosting a bird. The recto is delicately and elaborately embroidered in silk with a scene of birds, butterflies and insects, grouped around a blossoming tree, each flower, each bird, each insect worked with fine detail and colour. A grasshopper to the left, pairs of birds, different species suited to the proximity to water. The verso, also embroidered but more simply, includes the grasshopper and small butterflies, gathering around a branch of small pink flowers. A simple metal loop is fitted with a double cream silk tassel and also a cream silk label with Chinese characters. The black lacquered box with simple but elegant gold border to the lid exterior, is lined in cerise and mid blue, the inner lid padded, the cream silk painted with a pair of colourful birds amidst flowers, one with an exceptional tail. Guard length approx. 13 inches or 33cm.. Very good, clean, sound. Box hinges and clasp in good working order.

A Good Early to Mid-18th Century Chinese Painted Ivory Folding Fan, Qing Dynasty, the simple monture with mother-of-pearl tips to the guards, each etched with a slender bird, with the addition of mother of pearl thumb guards. The remaining guards, and the gorge sticks, are painted in red, gold and green, in the fashion of Imari porcelain. The double paper leaf is painted with men at work, one carrying his wares or delivering luggage, by means of a pole balanced across his shoulder. A seated figure with fixed fan observes. To the right a large bird to the foreground is of disproportionate size. The verso is plain, save for a floral sketch. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27.5cm. Together with Another Chinese Ivory Fan, of a similar period, the guards carved with flowers and leaves within an upper panel, above and below which the fan is painted in red. The gorge is carved and pierced in bands, some with a lattice, others with circles or shapes, divided by painted bands of designs in red. The cream leaf is simply painted with a central oval, in silver, enclosing a spray of pink roses and smaller yellow and blue flowers. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (2). First fan, the monture is sound with indications of white MOP thumb guards having originally been present. Both fans in good used condition

Lot 5240

A Late 18th Century/Early 19th Century Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, the twenty-four inner sticks and two guards with gently rounded tips. The guards are quite deeply carved with tiny birds, buildings, flowers and shells, the inner sticks more simply designed with fretwork in different patterns and sizes, with a deep central band containing an oval to each side and a central shield with finely carved entwined initials, possibly ''MJ''. Bears an old auction label dated 21st October 1970. Guard length approx. 9 inches or 23cm.. The ribbon is defective but present, could perhaps be reglued. Each of the carved oval features has slight loss to the ivory carving.

A 19th Century Chinese Carved Ivory Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, the guards deeply carved with pagodas, foliage and figures, the gorge sticks less so. Unusually, the double-sided cream silk leaf is painted most delicately in a silver-grey, each side in similar fashion but with subtle differences, with a large spray of flowers and leaves, birds and butterflies perched or in flight. Fitted with a knotted cord, lined in cerise silk, ending in a double cream silk tassel. Contained in a fitted black lacquer fan box, the interior deep pink, the hinged lid is painted inside with a tender outdoor scene with stylised trees and delicate blossom, of a robed gentleman proffering a fan to a lady. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm. Together with Another Similar but lacking a box, both sides of the double paper leaf showing scenes of social gatherings and daily life, the figures in robes of applied silk, and painted faces of ivory. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (2)The first fan and box are in lovely clean condition. Fan 2, one guard has broken at the shoulder, the leaf torn at this point, a fragment lacking. Several small tears to the lower leaf edge and some wear to the folds.

A Good Large Carved Tortoiseshell Chinese Fan, mid to late 19th century, Qing Dynasty, the monture a good weight and the guards deeply carved with a bat or butterfly, auspicious symbols, figures, buildings and foliage. The gorge, more lightly carved, on both sides, has similar design. Both sides of the double paper leaf show figures gathered in the outdoors, different views of the mountains and water in the background. The figures are dressed in robes of applied silk and their faces are painted on ivory. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. . Appears sound, rubbed a little on the folds but in good general order.

A Chinese Filigree Metal Mandarin Fan, the monture also enamelled, with flowers, foliage and figures seated under stylized trees. The recto shows figures wearing robes of applied silk, painted faces of applied ivory. The verso is scenic, locations not identified. Contained in the original silk covered cardboard box, applied with cut-out decoration. Some hand written oriental script is visible on the underside. Guard length 11 and 3/8 inches or 29cm.. Old repair to one stick. The loop and rivet have been replaced. Some restoration to the leaf.

Various 19th Century Needlework Tool Sets, to include one companion set formed as a lady's handbag in brown leather, fully fitted to contain scissors, hooks, a thimble, a needle case, and other items, mainly in silver metal, with threads wound around ivory and needles and pins in containers with retail labels, together with a cream case fitted with five matching sewing items including scissors and thimble, and a Moroccan tooled leather companion in handbag form with formal handle, the leather dyed green to the front flap and decorated in gold. The interior is formed with compartments, and in sections within, holding tools, threads and needles, the latter in a packet labelled in German (3).. The third item lacks part of the front fastener.

A Selection of Needlework Tools mainly in ivory, all decorated, mostly in a floral manner, unmatching. To include, a fitted boxed set with floral spray to the exterior lid, the tools inside all lightly carved and laid on green silk; a circular domed ivory pincushion with painted side; a small shaped ivory pincushion with top painted flowers and leaves; a circular container with side lines; and three needle cases, one painted with bright orange roses (7). Some rubbing to some of the decoration.

A Pair of Ivory Scissors in bird form; A Rectangular Ivory Case with sliding lid and carved fan to one end; A Small Early 19th Century Striped Net Miser's Purse in raspberry and cream thread, with pineapple bobbles to each end and a carved ivory closure ring; A Tiny Red-Topped Ivory Darning Mushroom; An Ivory Needle Case formed as a parasol, dyed blue, and One Similar, not dyed (6) . All appear in good order. Slight staining to the rectangular case.

A Variety of Sewing Items to include a small green leather case with silver metal front fastener, unrolling to reveal a pale lilac floral woven silk-lined interior fitted with brown leather straps and compartments and a large removable mirror. Thirteen bone sewing items within. Together with a small wooden handled marking wheel; a carved ivory thimble holder in the form of a standard lamp; an ivory needle case of umbrella form; an ivory barrel-shaped spool container; a brown wood-topped darning mushroom with bone handle, and a double-ended ruby velvet pincushion of barrel form (7). All in good used order.

Two Deeply and Intricately Carved Chinese Ivory Screw-Topped Cases, the largest measuring 3.75 inches or 9.5cm, the second 3.5 inches or 9cm. Together with A Ruby Velvet Topped Chinese Carved Ivory Pincushion, the base carved in pedestal style (3). The first case has a split across the bottom end.

An 18ct Gold Sewing Set presented in an elegant oval ivory case, the lid lined in cream silk, the base in taupe velvet, shaped to hold the tools. To include steel scissors with shaped gold handles, a thimble, a shaped needle case and two other items.. In very good order.

A Gilt Metal Sewing Set, French marks with maker's mark 'AOB' late 19th century, presented in an elegant oval ivory case, unlined but shaped inside to take the five tools comprising gold handled steel scissors, gold thimble, gold needle case and two other tools.. Large crack to the outside of the case lid, only a fraction of which is visible inside, and feels sound.

A Gilt Metal Sewing Set presented in an elegant oval ivory case, unlined but shaped to take the tools. The exterior lid is decorated with entwined initials. The interior is fitted for six tools, including scissors, a thimble, a needle case and three further items.. Note that the designs on the tools differ but fit the compartments exactly. The items are gilt metal, some French marks visible.

Lot 5329

A Plain Black Leather Rectangular Case containing three carved and shaped sewing tools plus two more, the case lined in red silk; Together with A Violin-Shaped Leather Case containing silver metal scissors and thimble; A Carved Ivory Stand, and Another Carved Ivory Stand containing a blue velvet pincushion to the upper section and a blue fabric tape measure to the middle (4). The exterior lid of item 1 is marked. Item 2, the case leather is rubbed. Item three appears sound, and item 4 the tape measure is torn but present, slight loss to the crenulations.

A Victorian Brown Leather Sewing Companion lined in mauve silk and fitted in the lid for various ivory tools, the base compartment empty for the storage of work in progress (a few odd items inside); A Small Domed Leather Case fitted for tools, but empty, bone motif on the exterior; A Decorative, Shaped Case in pale mauve leather, the lid decorated with mother-of-pearl, the inside fitted with various sewing tools and a silver metal thimble, and A Red Leather Shoe with fittings inside (4). All used, first item catch difficult, no major issues to report.

An Elegant Brown Leather Étui with gold metal and steel exterior decoration, domed hinged lid, opening to reveal a fitted interior covered in eau de nil velvet. At the rear, a red leather covered holder lifts out and opens to a fan-shape, holding packets of needles, a thimble holder formed when the handles are closed, with a gold metal thimble atop. In front, a glass bottle for refreshing liquid or perfume, to the sides a penknife with ivory body, a pair of scissors, an ivory bodkin, and three other tools, one with clenched fist at the top. Height 4 inches or 10cm.. Probably not all original contents. Catch firm, some light marking to the leather.

An Elegant, Shaped, Brown Leather Étui with monogram to the hinged lid exterior, a circular mirror fitted to the mauve silk lined lid interior. The main body is covered in mauve velvet, and fitted to contain an ivory backed brush, an ivory tatting shuttle, two ivory tools, a small pair of scissors and 3 further metal tools. Height 3.75 inches or 9.5cm.. Possibly not all original contents.

Three 19th Century Leather Covered Sewing Sets, the first of handbag form with rigid handle, the interior unfolding to reveal a plum silk lining, fitted with leather holders and a compartment at the top. Inside, seven ivory items, including a bodkin, needle case, large shuttle, buttonhook and nine metal items to include silver metal scissors with gold decoration. An oval mirror completes the set. Together with a smaller leather case in suitcase form, a central decoration possibly of a bird landing on a nest, side decoration in gold colour and steel, decorative gold clasp, the inside lid lined in ruby moiré silk and fitted with a small ivory bobbin and thread winder, the other half lined in ruby velvet and holding four/five ivory tools (the needle case might be bone), and finally a larger rectangular box with gold decoration to the lid, the inside lined with gold patterned paper, and firstly a red leather lift-out tray currently holding three ivory tools, the underneath fitted section lined in cream paper with gold decoration and holding a glass bottle with silver metal top for liquid/perfume, four thread holders, a place for a small thimble and a small ''book'' that lifts out with pins inside.. Item 1, some wear to the exterior of the silk at the sides of the bag. Item 3 lacks some items and all 4 thread holders have chipped ends.

Four 19th Century Vegetable Ivory Sewing Items, to include a carved needle case, in the Chinese fashion, a pedestal pincushion, the central section being bone; a thimble case of acorn form holding a silver metal thimble with floral design, and a tape measure and pin holder combined, with bone ends.. Some colour shading to the needle case, and a crack at the top.

Two Peas in a Pod, and more! Two ivory needle cases formed as pea pods, undulating to suggest the pea forms inside; a bone case of twisted form, with a cross as finial; a further case formed as an umbrella, the knop a clenched fist, and containing a stanhope with a picture of St. Maria Ander(ch?); and finally a bone and vegetable ivory tape measure of barrel form, unscrewing to hold needles in the middle, the finial again with a Stanhope, with a scene and the words ''reuine auf dem drachenfeld. This is a ruined castle in Germany, between Konigswinter and Bad Honnef. (5). One pea pod lacks the short stalk; one end spoke on the umbrella is chipped.

Comprising a carved ivory needle case, the pointed end no doubt also serving as a stiletto; an ivory needle case formed as a column, with domed ends and a small square left blank for initials; an ivory ???? with a honeycomb top and finial, which unscrew, the lower section also opening at the junction of the bulbous point; a tiny bone pincushion formed as a wheelbarrow with flowers carved each side and moving wheel, cream silk pad within; and a further needle case that unscrews either side of the bulbous central carving.. All appear sound but the final item has dark brown marking as if it has been caught in a flame.

Twelve Various Bone and Ivory Items, nine being needle cases, plus one case doubling as a stiletto, an ivory handled hook, and an ivory bodkin. The nine cases are carved and pierced, and three have obvious cracks.. Three cases have either chips or cracks but the other items appear in fair to good used condition.

A Fine Early 19th Century Ivory and Gilt Metal French Étui formed as an egg, possibly Palais Royale, the inside fitted with a chased silver-gilt panel to hold, from the rear, an ivory aide memoire/carnet de bal opening as a fan; a pencil; a stiletto and a bodkin; a thimble, a minute penknife; a tiny pair of scissors with circular handles, and a tiny ruby glass bottle with hinged lid, most likely to contain water used for sprinkling on fabric being worked. Contained in a heavy French etched glass and gold metal carrying case with front opening. Height of egg approx. 2.3/8 inches or 6cm.. Very good, slight colour change to the ivory, slightly darker towards the base. Labels still present from previous sellers, both describing the item as early 19th century, one adding “gilt metal”, the most recent giving the price being asked as £1200.

Five Interesting Bone and Ivory Lace Bobbins, to include a small and slender example with carving and red markings; another marked on the diagonal with words formed from blue dots; a more bulbous example with coiled gold wire; a slender example marked with a name, starting with A but worn; and finally another example marked on the diagonal with clearer alphabet letters, an Edward VII silver three pence coin dated 1909 supplementing small spangles. This would appear to be a piece of Trench Art and collectible in its own right.. Hard to make out the markings.

English, c.1800, the engraved paper laid on mahogany table, trade cartouches Designed for the New Portable Orreries by W Jones, and Made and Sold by W&S Jones 30 Holborn London graduated with days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names, signs and pictures, compass directions and degrees of amplitude and azimuth, table of principal affections of the planets dated ‚'Jany 1st 1794 Published as the Act directs by W. & S. Jones‚' giving details for each of the six planets nearest the sun for the year 1794, , also with tables for the revolutions and distances of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, with a diagram entitled The Solar System with positions for each of the planets and dated from 1796 to 1810, the 1¬Ω-inch globe made up of 24 hand-coloured engraved gores, signed Bardin London with graduated equatorial, ecliptic and one meridian, Tasmania as a peninsula in New Holland, mounted with brass twilight pointer and held above an angled ring to alter the height of the ivory moon, a secondary ring graduated with the signs for the houses of the Zodiac, and a disc showing the phases of the moon, on multi-wheeled geared mechanism, at the centre the brass sun mounted on the central axis, with planet arms for the ivory Mercury and Venus, the mechanism driven by a cranked handle in original oak case with brass oil lamp which can be fitted as alternative to the brass ball sun, table diameter 32.3cm. Condition Report:The mahogany table is sound with no losses or shrinkage cracks, the engraved paper is complete, without paper losses but faded with some wear and some stains (please see images, the third online image shows the largest stain). The Bardin globe appears in good condition with no losses. The brass clockwork mechanism is complete and fully functioning with very little wear and retains much of the original lacquer. However, the brass nut securing the mechanism to the table is missing. The pointer is missing and the ring adjusting the altitude of the moon and the zodiac ring appear to have been repaired. There appear to be no other repairs or replacements, assuming the ivory ball representing Mercury has been cleaned rather than replaced.

Binding & Calligraphic Manuscript.- Sangorski (Alberto).- Spenser (Edmund) Una and the Redcross Knight, from "The Faerie Queene", illuminated manuscript in red, black and colours on vellum, 14 leaves including blanks, title in red with large illuminated initial, full-page oval watercolour of the Redcrosse Knight and Una on horseback within illuminated floral frame in gold & colours, 7 large illuminated initials in gold & colours and 3 smaller initials in red, first leaf with decorative floral border incorporating coat-of-arms in red and silver, text written in black ink with leaf of biography and colophon at end stating "...designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski...with miniature...painted from an original design expressly for this work and will not be duplicated" and signed by him at end, ivory silk guard to watercolour, superbly bound in turquoise morocco elaborately tooled in gilt, by Rivière & Son, both covers with intricate design of trees, intertwining branches, leaves & flowers, 2 owls in upper branches in corners and shields with a red cross on trunks of trees at either side, all formed by onlays of green, brown, purple, fawn & burgundy morocco and outlined & elaborately tooled in gilt with leafy sprays against a background of dense pointillé, the whole within a gilt-tooled border edged by onlaid strips of black morocco, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, title and author in gilt in two compartments and date at foot, the others with leafy spray against pointillé in gilt, turn-ins repeating borders of gilt tooling edged by black morocco strips, doublures and endpapers of ivory watered silk, signed at foot of front turn-in, g.e., preserved in modern suede-lined turquoise morocco drop-back box with borders imitating those on the book, spine gilt in compartments, 8vo (c.200 x 150mm.), for Rivière & Son, [1916].⁂ A stunning binding with rich decoration covering the entire book. Alberto Sangorksi was the elder brother of Francis Sangorksi who established the famous bookbinding firm with partner George Sutcliffe. He worked for Sangorksi & Sutcliffe, who became known for their jewelled bindings, and also for Rivière & Son from 1910. He produced for both many such highly-decorated illuminated manuscripts, the most famous of which, "the Great Omar", was lost when the Titanic sank in 1912.

Cosway Binding.- Browning (Robert) A Selection from the Works, engraved portrait, tear to pp.177-178 repaired, superb "Cosway" binding of brown morocco, by Rivière & Son, the upper cover incorporating a fine watercolour circular miniature of the author on ivory by Miss C.B.Currie under glass and framed by narrowly-spaced gilt lines radiating out from the miniature forming a star shape with a double gilt fillet border, spine gilt in compartments of oval sun with radiating rays, with "Cosway binding" in gilt to fore-edge of upper board and "Invented by J.H,Stonehouse" to fore-edge of lower, pale grey watered-silk doublures and endpapers, with "Miniatures by C.B.Currie" at foot of rear doublure, binding signed at foot of front turn-in, t.e.g., others uncut, preserved in cloth slip-case, 8vo (c.165 x 135mm.), 1865.⁂ A fine example of a signed Currie Cosway binding of c.1930 with certificate bound in at beginning, "This is No. 915 of the Cosway Bindings invented by J.H.Stonehouse, with Miniatures on Ivory by Miss Currie" signed by both.
