λ A MUGHAL INDIAN EBONY AND IVORY CABINET GUJARAT OR SINDH, LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY AND LATER inlaid with scrolling leaf and flower borders and with repeating patterns of flowers on a rosewood ground, with a pair of hinged doors revealing a divided interior with a pair of mahogany drawers, the sides inlaid, on a later, probably 18th century English, ebonised stand, the cabinet later adapted and lacking its original interior the cabinet: 51.5cm high, 97.5cm wide, 45.3cm deep, overall: 130.7cm high, 98.8cm wide, 46.3cm deep CATALOGUE NOTE This present lot with its beautiful inlay of flowers reflects the high Mughal style of setting rows of flowering plants in alternating patterns on a plain ground. This enchanting device is characteristic of the reign of Shah Jahan and can be found decorating buildings erected by the Emperor. For a very similar example see the Victoria and Albert Museum, South Asia, Room 41, case 16, which is on loan from Dr. and Mrs A. Poteliakhoff.
λ AN INDO-PORTUGUESE ROSEWOOD, HARDWOOD AND IVORY INLAID CABINET ON STAND GUJARAT OR SINDH, EARLY 17TH CENTURY AND LATER inlaid with panels of birds amongst urns of flowers and leaves, the top with musicians and ladies dancing, the sides with the addition of tigers attacking antelope, the front with peacocks and two hunters attacking the tigers, some stained green, enclosing an arrangement of six drawers, the top a long drawer with a false front, the centre a deep drawer, inlaid with scrolling leaves, flowers, birds and two courtly men, with a later leather lined writing surface, with side iron carrying handles, with a later applied moulding to base and on a later stand, the undertier with a further panel, probably taken from the inside of the fall, restorations and replacements the cabinet: 36cm high, 53.8cm wide, 41.5cm deep overall: 107.3cm high CATALOGUE NOTE For a very similar cabinet, see the Victoria and Albert Museum, no. 122-1906. λ A VICTORIAN BLACK LEATHER WRITING SLOPE BY ASPREY the hinged lid with a sunken brass handle and gilt tooled initials 'M.F.H.', the interior fitted with a sprung stationery compartment to the underside of the lid with monogrammed utensils and a steel corkscrew, with a lift-out tray with a portable lighter and inkwell, with a hinged slope with compartments and a triple panel ivory notepad, the brass lock stamped 'ASPREY 166 BOND ST.' 18.5cm high, 41cm wide, 28cm deep.
