A scarce George I Scottish silver apple-shaped teapot Colin MacKenzie, Edinburgh 1721-22, assay Master Edward Penman, of simple plain tapered form with shaped foot, with straight spout and muscular handle with ivory insulators, the hinged cover with shaped hinge and ivory bun finial on stepped mount and with silver cap 15cm high 20.5oz Notes: Apple-shaped teapots are in any instance scarce, but to find one of such an early date is extremely unusual. An earlier example by Colin MacKenzie (Edinburgh 1715-16) is recorded in the National Museum of Scotland collection, but the present example must be considered one of the earliest Scottish teapots of any form available to collectors. From extant examples this form of teapot only seems to have lasted in Scotland for a short time from circa 1714 - 1730, before the more commonly known spherical bullet-shaped teapot becomes the standard.

A rare and early George I Scottish silver teapot stand Colin MacKenzie, Edinburgh 1718 - 19, Assay Master Edward Penman, of simple shallow dished form on slightly flared collet foot, with crest and motto engraved to centre 10.7cm diameter, 2.7oz Note: this is the earliest known Scottish silver teapot stand and would have been an integral part of the serving of tea in any Scottish home, keeping the hot base of the flat based apple teapot off the highly polished wooden table surfaces. The earliest recorded Scottish teapots date to 1714 - 15, this piece only a few years after this date, shows the truly remarkable survival for such a small item of Scottish silver. A late 18th century ivory and ebony banded baluster snuff mull composed of sixteen alternating staves of ebony and ivory, of typical baluster form with girdle, with ivory collar to rim and stepped collar to foot, with wooden base, the shaped white metal butterfly hinge to staved cover with ivory border and with applied plaque to centre with initials `DG` engraved; together with ivory snuff spoon with turned handle and simple pierced bowl (2) 7cm high, cover 6cm wide Provenance: The Estate of Sir George Washington Baxter Bart. and thence by direct descent. Ballater- a miniature Scottish provincial silver mounted novelty thermometer William Robb, marked ROBB / BALLATER Edinburgh 1912, the simple rectangular case with hinged lid opening to reveal an ivory stained plaque with mercury thermometer 5.5cm 1,5cm x 0.5cm Note: Miniature and novelty items formed a large part of Robb`s work and although made for commercial reasons, they also to show his ability as a maker. A large range were made and were popular with local collectors.
