HIPPOPOTAMUS - IVORY TEETH two pairs of Hippopotamus teeth of varying sizes, both mounted on a wooden shield. Also with two additional Hippo teeth, these were all brought back by the vendor in the 1960's. Shield 59cms high *This species is listed as Annex B so no licence is required as they are Pre Convention (1975), so no documents would exist or be required to sell. If sold/shipped outside of the EU a CITES re-export licence would be required.

W.A.P. MARTIN(1827-1916) American Presbyterian missionary to China, served as interpreter during the negotiations for the Treaty of Tientsin in 1858. Signature on a 12mo sheet of paper, dated March 23, 1906 at Shanghai, to a Miss Blodgett, also executing lines from a Chinese poem in English and Chinese characters, in full: "A speck upon your ivory form/You soon may grind away/But stains upon the heart or tongue/Remain alas! for aye". Folds, else very good.
An oval bust portrait miniature, of a lady wearing a white headdress, watercolour on ivory, the reversed inscribed Zaag by Will (William) Wood, of Cork Street, Lond: 1805, 8 x 6.5 cm See illustration Condition report Report by GHIvory generally in good condition with no obvious warping, cracking etc. When the miniature is removed from the frame it is evident there is some very light surface scratching to the image, and some rubbing around the edges where the image has sat in the frame. Overall the image does not appear to be faded or with any major damage or restoration.

A 19th century ivory panel and a greenstone Buddhist lion with wood stands, the panel carved in relief with immortals and attendants on mountain ledges below a pine tree, 12 x 5.5cm (4.75 x 2.25 in), the soapstone lion reclining with a pup by her tail, 7.5cm (3 in) wide (4) It may be that two roundels of pine needles have been inlet into the piece because there is a dowel at the top back.
