A 20th-century chest, modelled on the 15th-century Embriachi workshop.Wood, bone and boxwood marquetry.Box in good condition. Rusty lock fittings.Measurements: 14 x 22 x 12 cm.The chest is constructed from a wooden core, covered on the outside with a beautiful ornamental geometric marquetry design. It has a lock on the front. The decoration is organised in rhomboid-shaped strips of stained walnut and bone wood, using the technique known as 'alla certosina' marquetry. It is a style that follows the decorative models of the Embriachi workshop, which originated in a family of Italian craftsmen active in Florence and Venice between the 14th and 15th centuries. They specialised in ivory carving, producing everything from small objects for domestic use (boxes, small arches, toilet articles) to important sculpted altarpieces. Their production is also characterised by the use of detailed geometric inlays of the type shown here. This type of chest and chest "alla certosina" were the most frequently produced in the Veneto area during the 15th and 16th centuries and were exported all over Europe, where they were highly appreciated by the aristocratic classes.

French school ca. 1790."Portrait of a lady.Gouache on vellum.Size: 6,5 x 5 x 0,5 cm.Miniature of oval format representing a French lady dressed in the fashion of the end of the 18th century. Miniature portraits developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. They consisted of small paintings set in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. The frame of these portraits was usually oval or circular. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

It is an allegory of Venus and Cupid, one of the most represented mythological themes throughout the history of art. The piece is notable for its delicacy.Since the Renaissance, miniature portraits, framed in a circle or oval, were pieces for private contemplation. Considered as jewellery, in the 17th century they became pieces of personal adornment or as gifts, when they were mounted as jewellery. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. Designed as a British officer's war game, used for the instruction of military personnel in military manoeuvres, it was reputedly a British version of 'Kriegsspiel', a war game originally invented by Lieutenant Georg von Reiswitz for training officers in the Prussian army during the early 19th century.Played on a map drawn on a scale of six inches to the mile with the troops represented by small slate blocks, one coloured red for one force, the other coloured blue for the other force. A comparable example in the National Army Museum collection also has fifteen maps of the West Dorking training areas, including Aldershot, Camberley, Hog's Back and are part of a series issued by the War Office which had been coloured specially for the purpose.'To carry out the Game of War in as most complete manner as possible, the instructions informed that one should have enough officers to fill the following posts:Two officers to represent the commanders of the opposing forces.Subordinate officers to command any detachments of importance from the main body.An UmpireTwo Assistant UmpiresAn Officer to keep a journal recording the progress of the operations, time of the despatch and receipt of messages and losses'.The item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10).
