Rudyard Kipling handwritten letter on Bateman`s Burwash, Sussex headed paper dated December 7th 1929: Dear Lilian and Margaret I havn`t been able to get exactly the kind of knives I wanted for you to carry in your sporrans because they don`t seem to make them in England. However these two have scissors and the button hook and one or two other things and I am sending them with all my best wishes. Please send me back one penny stamp each, or else it will be unlucky. They are exactly the same except the handles and I had them done up and the parcels mixed, so I don`t know which is ivory and which is staghorn and I have marked them outside at a guess - so as to be quite fair - I hope they`ll be useful for a while. always most sincerely Rudyard Kipling
