A very rare Chinese carved rhinoceros horn Buddha figure, 19th C. Please not that we strongly oppose the illegal trade in rhinoceros horn products. This set was legally acquired and can, according to CITES regulations, be legally traded. Exportation of this piece outside of the EU is prohibited by Cites regulation. The piece comes with a hand-written provenance description, and the original photo of the owner with the statue in Belgian Congo. Dim.: 13,4 x 18,2 cm Weight: 1,061 kg Provenance: Acquired in Belgian Congo, before 1936, when it was brought to Belgium by a family member of the present owner. Accompanied by a photograph made in Kilo, Congo, ca. 1930. The monk Budai, also known as the Laughing Buddha, is an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha predicted to succeed Gautama Buddha in the future. Typically depicted with a joyful expression and wearing loose fitting robes to reveal his plump stomach seated representing contentment and abundance, Budai is also associated with the protection of children and is often shown with small children playfully climbing on his belly or back. Figural carvings from rhinoceros horn are rare but the most common depictions include Manjusri and Budai. Another carving of Budai formerly in the Ruth Dreyfus and Arthur M. Sackler collections is illustrated by Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 117 no.69, and again by J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, no. 327 and was sold at Christie's New York, 1 December 1994, lot 28. Another related example formerly in the George and Mary Bloch collection illustrated by J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, no. 327, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 23 October 2005, lot 34. A rhinoceros horn carving of Budai attributed to the late Ming dynasty but lacking a reign mark in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Shanghai, 2001, no. 138; and another in the Shanghai Museum, is illustrated in Shanghai bowuguan Jikan, vol. 6, 1992, fig. 28. A circa 1900 Indian carved ivory figure group of an elephant and figures in a howdah, raised on a galleried plinth base with lion's paw feet CONDITION REPORTS The canopy supports on one side have been reglued and there is some chipping. One of the elephant's earrings is off and the loop is broken, the ladder on the side is missing a hoop and there is something broken/missing to the howdah - please see photos. In need of a clean. Has wear and tear and some chipping, dirt etc. Height approx 16.5cm, width approx 6.7cm, length approx 10.5cm
A box containing a 19th Century pierced fan, a plastic fan, a green shagreen covered cigarette case, a green shagreen covered powder compact, a pink shagreen style powder compact and a modern dragonfly decorated address book CONDITION REPORTS Please note that the carved ivory box has been withdrawn from this lot. The ivory fan - the silk ribbon is completely broken, there is some light wear to the painting on each strut. The plastic fan - some areas of discolouration where the thread has been glued into place. Glove stretchers are cracked and stained. The green cigarette case - chagreen covering is coming away from the case especially on one hinged side, there are areas of discolouration. Both compacts have powder still inside them. The pink compact hinge is buckled at one end, although still operational. Dragon fly decorated list is missing several stones. All items have general wear, stains, etc

A miniature tortoiseshell and mother of pearl inlaid guitar ornament, an early 20th Century carved ivory figure of three kittens in a basket, a miniature Satsuma pottery vase, a carved pink stone rabbit, a miniature fan and two miniature sets of playing cards, housed in a leather holder CONDITION REPORTS Guitar ornament is missing several areas of tortoiseshell, the ivory pegs are broken, no strings. The miniature Satsuma vase has crazing all over, some red deposits to the inside and rim, possibly wax. The rabbit has various internal flaws and some chips and cracking especially to the underneath. The fan's silk ribbon is disintegrated, paintwork is rubbed. Cards - are dogeared and one is bent, case is cracked. All items have wear and tear, scratches, dirt, etc
