A finely carved pair of ivory Vases, mid 19th century, each section of tusk with figures of samurai and demons in a rocky landscape below pine or fruit growing from rocks with trailing Chinese lanterns, details undercut and black-stained, repaired age cracks, 30 and 29.5cm overall, hardwood stands to simulate rock-carved bamboo (4) CONDITION REPORT: Repaired age cracks.

An interesting ivory Hare, 1946-52, the animal dancing on a low mound, its ears pricked, engraved Kozan, 6.5cm Immediately after the Second World War, Japan was occupied by American forces. Ivory stocks were depleted and pieces carved at that time were invariably on a small scale and they differ in feel from both pre-war and later examples. CONDITION REPORT: Small chip to ear, and small chips to base.

A good ivory small Brush Pot Bitong, late Ming Dynasty, 15/16th century, the section of tusk of subtly curved cylindrical section on three bracket feet with ribbed mouth and base, the latter probably original and of sperm-whale jaw bone, age cracks, 10cm The use of an exotic and rare material such as sperm-whale jaw bone, with its unusual markings, would have appealed to the late Ming scholar. For an illustration of a very similar section, see T.K. Penniman, Pictures of Ivory and other Animal Teeth, Bone and Antler, Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, n.d. pl XV. 明末十五/十六世纪 象牙笔筒 CONDITION REPORT: 3.5cm, 3cm and 1.2cm cracks to lower body. The base is bone.

Fitted box with splits to top, and sides of top, small chips to edge.
An exceptional 'Hundred Boys' large Zitan Brush Pot, late 18th/early 19th century, deeply carved with numerous small figures at various pursuits on a rocky mountainside below clouds, one side with the boys entertaining a dragon with musical instruments beneath pine and other trees, natural split, base missing, also other minor damage, 24.5cm The Hundred Boys is a popular Chinese subject and lends itself to the imagination of the painter, sculpture or craftsman, for example a scroll by Leng Mei (fl.1700-1742) from the Yongzheng Period was with Sotheby's Hong Kong 9 October 2012, Lot 3008. No other Zitan brush pot of this importance seems to be recorded. The carving of numerous small figures - often Buddhist monks, or families - on a rocky mountainside is familiar from Canton carving of ivory card cases, fan guards and boxes. The monastery of Tiantai Shan in Zhejiang Province in the Sir Victor Sassoon Collection, illustrated in 'Chinese Ivories, The Shang to the Qing', OCS 1984, pl.269 reflects the idiom. Another mountain, this carved in bamboo, is illustrated in 'Chinese Bamboo Carving', HK1978, no. 195 and a closer parallel is with a brush pot in the same book, no. 76, dated to the late 18th century. 清十八世纪末/十九世纪初 紫檀雕庭院婴戏图笔筒 CONDITION REPORT: One drumming figure with hands missing. The smaller bone fan with one end guard broken at hinge, one guard loose from material.
A Chinese bronze Kinko on a carp, inlaid with silver, a carved wood scales holder in the form of a fish, an ivory aubergine and a mother-of pearl snuff bottle CONDITION REPORT: Kinko carp: No obvious faults. Snuff bottle: chips to rim. Aubergine: pitting to one side. Fish scales: small chip to tail fin.
An ivory bridge of elephants, repair, wood stand, 36.5 cm overall, an Indian ivory box and cover, carved with animals, 10cm, an unusual Indian ivory tusk carved with a mongoose eyeing a string of six elephants, 58cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: Indian ivory tusk with small section missing from underside to accommodate to stand which is now missing. Box and cover with no obvious faults. Ivory bridge of elephants with repairs. Glass is moulded and hollow. No signs of repair. 321.6g (11.34oz). Height 7cm. 5.5cm wide and deep.
Miscellaneous, a gold-lacquered tortoiseshell cigar case, a Shibayama games counter, a netsuke of Jurogin riding a peach, a wood netsuke of two chestnuts and a German ivory sunshade handle (5) CONDITION REPORT: Cigar case: small amount of rubbing to lacquer work, splits to join of interior base. Games counter: two small cracks to surface, shallow mark to bottom left corner. Jurogin: no obvious faults. Sunshade handle: most likely reduced in length, but no obvious faults. Chestnut netsuke: no obvious faults.
