Watercolour on ivory Inscribed by the artist and dated 1837 verso 17.2cm x 13cm, arch top In a gilt metal rococo frame   Aeneas Barkly (1768 -1836) was a very successful London West India merchant, ship owner, and plantation owner. He was a partner in Davidson, Barkly & Co., one of the largest West India trading businesses in London prior to the ending of slavery, awarded large compensation for the loss of slaves across the Caribbean. He married Susannah Louisa Ffrith, daughter of a Jamaica coffee planter, in 1805. He died suddenly on 17th August 1836. The first being a carved (believed hippo) tusk, possibly a spear tip - depicting a single figure to the centre, the second an ivory tusk carved with several animals and figures with inset glass eyes ascending to the top figure (head missing), the third (smallest) carved with various figures leading to a kneeling figure to top. A large 19th Century Georgian Regency English antique rosewood tea caddy of sarcophagus form. The outer case of simple form having a brass hoop swing handles with shell back-plates. Brass lock and escutcheon with gadrooned skirt and brass ball feet with floral decoration. The hinged cover opening to reveal a three section appointed interior with each section having separate lids with ivory handles. Measure 22cm x 32cm x 17cm. Note; one of the ball feet has been replaced.

The top heavily carved having a central scene of a Goddess with oval cartouche panels to the border and carved figures within, interspersed with floral decoration. Raised on elephant trunk supports having ivory tusks and carved decoration to the front and revers. Measures 66cm x 63cm diameter.
