19th century English ivory and bone chess set made by Charles Hastilow circa 1850, provenance by direct family descent, unusually large red and white set in barleycorn pattern the kings with maltese cross finials, 7.5" high, the queens with feather finials, 7.25" high, the bishops with open mitre tops, 3.5", the knights (without reigns), 3.5", the rooks with turreted towers with flag finials, 5.25", the pawns 2.5", together with 15 red and 17 white plain draughts, 1.75", and one odd red draught with carved decoration and two scorers PROVENANCE; Direct family descent from Charles Hastilow, the lot is sold with a card for "C Hastilow and Sons, ivory bone and hardwood turners of 3 Queen Street, Worship Street, London EC". Family tradition states that this set is a copy of a set which was exhibited in the Great Exhibition 1851. It is said that it took four years to complete .
In the manner of Gillows, 19th century burr walnut, ebony, boxwood and stained ivory strung Bonheur du Jour with inset Jasperware plaques, the top with a mirrored open section flanked by two cupboard doors inset with plaques of classical maidens, the base with three drawers, the central drawer fitted with blue gilt and tooled leather writing service, raised on reeded shaped supports with undershelf, with gilt metal mounts 56 x 43 x 21in. (142.24 x 109.22 x 53.34cm)
A 19th Century Indian Khyber Knife, the fullered T section steel blade with tendril engraved back edge, brass ferrule and two piece ivory grip with hooked pommel and leather scabbard; an Indian Kukri, with bone grip and leather sheath set with a small knife; an Indian Kukri, with horn grip and leather sheath with two small knives. A VERY GOOD 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD TOKYO SCHOOL IVORY FIGURE OF A GENTLEMAN decorated with silver and gold overlay, modelled holding a rabbit in one hand and a basket of fruit in the other, the base surmounted with a silvered rabbit. Inset signed red tablet to base. Few natural splits, minor paint wear, repair to basket. 16ins high.

Few natural splits to figure and head-wear, minor repairs. Signed to base. 16.5ins high.
A VERY GOOD 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE TOKYO SCHOOL IVORY FIGURE OF FUDO-MYOO of fine quality carving, modelled standing before surrounding flames, holding a serpent in one hand and a sword in the other, supported upon a lotus leaf circular plinth. Extensive script block to underside. Minor loss to one section of flame, one small chip to lotus leaf, otherwise ok. 14.5ins high. Translated text: Made in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan, Spring 29years in the Meiji period, sculptured by Suzaki.
