Mid-18th century English School, a portrait miniature on ivory of Colonel Shugborough Whitney with wig, wearing a red coat, grey waistcoat, agate reverse, with inscription around the reverse of frame "Coll Shug Whitney- a man of undaunted courage & undaunted integrity, Died for his country at the battle of Falkirk 1746", the image 4.3cm high. Illustrated Footnote: In Dodderidge's biography of Colonel James Gardiner he states that Whitney is recorded as taking part in the Battle of Falkirk Muir on 17 January 1746, having succeeded to Gardiner's command of the 13th Dragoons. His commanding officer General Henry 'Hangman' Hawley made the mistake of launching an unsupported cavalry attack upon the Highlanders; "a blunder which lost the English the battle and Whitney his life".

Illustrated Footnote: Reverend Henry Leslie of Ballibay, co. Monaghan was the son of Reverend Peter Leslie and Jane Dopping. He married Catherine Meredyth (daughter of Charles Meredyth, Dean of Ardfert), in 1753. They lived at Ballibay, County Monaghan, and had three children; Peter Henry Leslie (b 1755)- died in the American wars Catherine Letitia Leslie (d 1814) Charles Albert Leslie.

Dec 1832 (Lot 2442) Charles Richard Leslie Elizabeth Catherine Leslie Catherine Leslie Catherine Letitia Leslie (Lot 2438) Emily Eleanor Wilhelmina Leslie.

Pierre Edouard Dagoty (b. 1755) French portrait miniature on ivory of Arthur French (c. 1802- 1843), with brown hair, wearing a blue coat, a buff coloured waistcoat and a black stock, signed and dated 1821, numbered 10 on the reverse with inscription, the image 6.7cm high. Illustrated Footnote: Arthur French of Clonsilla, son of Robert Henry French and Charlotte Reynell married Emily Eleanor Wilhelmina Leslie - the daughter of Charles Albert Leslie and Ellen Magennis (lot 2435). She died on 26 August 1884. Their elder son Robert Charles Leslie (Lot 2446), of Ballibay, D.L., inherited Ballibay and assumed by Royal Licence, 1885, the name and arms of Leslie. He married Charlotte Philippa Mary Kelso (Lot 2447), daughter of Capt. Edward Kelso. of Kelsoland and Horkesley One son Theodore Barrington Norman Leslie (Lot 2448) an officer from a Rifle Brigade who died in South African War 1899.

Illustrated Footnote: Sarah, Georgina and Catherine were the daughters of Ensign John Bland and Elizabeth Birch (the daughter of Robert Birch M.P.) and lived at Blandsfort, Abbeyleix, County Laois, Ireland.
