Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943), Lighter than Air, Ada May, an Art Deco carved ivory and patinated bronze figure, circa 1925, modelled arms raised, as though holding a bubble, on a geometric marble and onyx plinth, the silver plaque inscribed, Lighter than Air, Ada May by F Preiss, foundry mark to the bronze, 33.5cm high Note: modelled after the American dancer and screen actress Ada May (1896-1978), the figure is typical of Preiss's use of the athletic female form popular in Europe and America in the 1920s and 30s. The use of pigment in the face and also a coloured matte wash to the bronze, creates a sophisticated and refined sculpture See Shayo, A. 2005, 'Ferdinand Preiss, The Fire and the Flame', Antique Collector's Club, p.183 and Catley, B. 2003, 'Art Deco and Other Figures', Antique Collectors Club, p.296 for illustrated examples of this design.
