A fine and rare Schiaparelli bias-cut brocaded satin gown 1936 labelled Schiaparelli London the complicated bodice with zig-zag seaming to the shoulders and V-neckline culminating in a bow the rear bodice with panels of brocade forming a V-formation to the waist where a tri-angle of brocaded satin is inset irregular ruching to the front hips large ivorine zip fastener to one side and metal zips to the long tapering sleeves the skirt flaring from the knee with large bias cut godets of brocade the satin woven with delicate silver scrolling buds which are cut to follow the contours of the body bust 86cm 34in; together with a cloth of silver train (2) Provenance: Lady Clark of Saltwood. It is probable that this gown was worn to attend the coronation of King George IV. The complex clever and dramatic cutting of the gown and the very modern celluloid zip fastener are juxtaposed with the traditional silver/gilt/ivory brocade and of this classic and elegant court gown which cleverly makes it both cutting edge and traditional in one fell swoop.

A FINE EARLY 19TH CENTURY BOXWOOD AND IVORY MODEL OF THE THIRD RATE 74-GUN H.M.S. MARS the plank and pinned hull with open gun ports and brass cannon, carved detailing to stern and hand painted figure head, with fine deck detailing and armaments and bound masts with standing rigging, seated within a waterline display stand with skiffs to starboard within a mahogany and ebony parquetry case and further enhanced by an oil on panel harbour scene panorama, the case with label marked 'H.M.S. Hunter', 60cm length (58.5cm x 71cm x 26cm case dimensions). * This model is most probably the fifth vessel to be named Mars, constructed at Deptford in 1794. Taking part in the early French Revolution she was assigned to the Channel Fleet and under Captain Alexander Hood was prominent in the Spithead Mutiny in 1797. In 1798 she fought a famous single ship dual with the newly commissioned French ship Hercule, during which she lost 31 crew including Captain Hood, against the French loss of over 300. At Trafalgar, Mars sailed in the column led by Admiral Collingwood and was heavily damaged by French and Spanish cannons, with 25 crew killed including her Captain George Duff. Afterwards, she served in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of Portugal, before being de-commissioned and hulked at Portsmouth in 1813.
