Pacific Northwest of North America, North Coast art style, Haida, Tlingit, or Tsimshian cultures, ca. 1750 to 1850 CE. This is a bone or whale ivory effigy figure done in the traditional North Coast art style, with a "flat design" subtly sculpted, almost bas-relief style that will be familiar to fans of Pacific Northwestern art. The figure is a human, crouched, with hands around its knees; it has been drilled at the top for suspension. This may have been a small "totem" like object, carried by an individual, but there is very little wear to it. The oldest forms of these cultures' art have been found in cave sites and near remote shaman graves. This piece was previously part of the Queen Charlotte Islands Museum (which has since been renamed the Haida Gwaii/Haida Heritage Centre) in British Columbia. Size: 1.65" W x 2.5" H (4.2 cm x 6.4 cm). Provenance: Ex-Private M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL; ex-Queen Charlotte Islands Museum Condition: Slight patina, but carving is clear. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Europe, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A carved wood, bone, and ivory hinged triptych depicting the crucifixion in the center with a swooning Mary supported by Mary Magdelene to Christ's right and Saint John supported by another, perhaps the "Beloved Disciple," to Christ's left. Depicted in the side wings are either the donors, a female to the left and a male to the right, or the Virgin Mary and Saint John once again. An angel holding a cross inscribed shield hovers in the pendentive above the crucifixion scene. Surrounding each panel of the triptych is a border carved from bone inscribed with a lovely foliated pattern. The figures and architectural elements within are carved from ivory. The panels are further embellished with a deep blue pigment behind the iconography that provides a pleasing contrast with the lustrous, cream-hued ivory. Size: 8.5" W x 9.5" H (21.6 cm x 24.1 cm) Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: This piece was made from separate pieces or slats. The vertical fissures are not fissures or splits. There is one small crack under the capital to Christ's left. The ivory and bone have aged quite nicely. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Portuguese and Spanish Colonies, possibly Goa, India, or the Philippines, 16th to 18th Century CE. These are beautiful and fairly unique devotional items made in the Christian colonies of Portugal and Spain. They are carved representations of Christ on the Cross; the larger and more detailed of the two is ivory and the other is bone. The level of detail given to the loin cloth (often called a perizonium in art history parlance) dates these to the Baroque period. Both represent the influence of colonial Christianity on the East Indies. The height of Goa's prosperity was from 1575 to 1625, when the city was effectively a Portuguese outpost; by the second half of the 17th century, Manila had become the major entry point for European trade with southeast Asia. Size of largest: 1.5" W x 5.5" H (3.8 cm x 14 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: One of the Cristos is in better condition than the other; although it is missing its arms, its carved details are very clear. The other has more wear, particularly to the hands and feet, which have lost their level of detail. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111528
