A very rare Indian ivory Card Case, late 18th/early 19th century, carved on one side with a pagoda, flanked by three figures under coconut palms, the base with three top hatted figures on a triple arch, small figures at the foot and within leafy trees in which perch two birds, the other side with an arcade enclosing two hunters with each two hounds, the centre with a man and his wife beneath leafy swags, the top with three seated figures, small arrow-like birds drifting on most parts, the sides with dotted palmettes, 8.5 x 6.2cm The figures' dress would appear to be 17th century. The piece is very well carved and most of the iconography appears parallel with coconut carvings of the late 18th/early 19th century. The buildings bear a resemblance to those on some bidri wares, such as those on a 17th century huqqa base illustrated in Bronze, Silver & Gold from Mughal India, Mark Zebrowski, 1997, pls. 519 and 510 CONDITION REPORT: Tiny crack to top left hand corner. Small carving mark to opposing corner. Very faint crack to lower left of the upper section. Possibly, although we believe contemporary, a small splice repair to the interior section.
An onlaid lacquer Plaque, early 20th century, the black ground dish with a cock and hen in mother-of-pearl, abalone and stained ivory, signed Kurihara, stress crack, 48.5cm CONDITION REPORT: 8cm fine crack to right and 4.5cm fine crack to left of cockerel. Tiny section of mother of pearl missing to top feather tip of cockerel. 1cm crack from top tail feathers of hen. Very small nicks and splits throughout border and some gilt rubbing to rim
A bronze Group, c.1885, of two tigers attacking an elephant, their skins appropriately patinated, cast (?) zan saku, tusks replaced, one tiger loose, 37cm CONDITION REPORT: 34cm long. Repair to top tip of elephant trunk. Tusks appear not to be ivory, and are replacements (not original). Front tiger 1.5mm section of tail missing to rear although not visible from the front. The upper tiger has inset glass eyes. The lower tiger with no glass inset eyes.
