Sarah Wright Biffin (1784-1850) portrait miniature on ivory, portrait of a Gentleman named as Thomas Pym Weekes, 1817, the accompanying pen on paper note states 'drawn by Miss Biffin, born without hands or feet', image 7 x 6cm, in folding leather case. NB: Sarah Biffin was born in Somerset in 1784, she had a condition now recognised as phocomelia and was born with no arms and only vestigial legs, but displayed remarkable perseverance, learning to sew, write and draw using her mouth. At the age of 13 she was recruited by a travelling fairground and became a fairground amusement for the following 16 years. Billed as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’, her skills as a painter to the fore, customers were charged three guineas for her miniature portraits, a raw deal for Sarah, who it is recorded, received £5 salary per year. Aged 30 her fortunes changed when the Earl of Morton sat for her at a country fair, he was so impressed with her skills that he became her patron, paying for her to have lessons with royal watercolourist William Craig and ultimately establishing her in a studio in Bond Street, where her customers included Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, aristocrats and members of the European royalty. The death of her patron, coupled with failing eyesight and physical deterioration prompted retirement to Liverpool where she was buried in 1850, aged 66. A series of dedicated exhibitions in recent years have resulted in a refreshed recognition of her legacy and her remarkable career. APHA Ref: CBWTU55D
Nicholas Freese (active 1794-1814) portrait miniature on ivory - Portrait of an Officer named verso as Joseph Potts, who was at the Battle of Waterloo, uncle to Major C Potts Rosser of 29th Regiment, artists label verso, oval, 7 x 5.5cm, papier mâché frame. APHA Ref: NA7RTK2SPlease see further images of the portrait now removed from the frame. The condition is good overall - however there does appear to be an area of rubbing beside his nose to the left, but not particularly to the detriment of the portrait.
