An orrery, 20th century, the brass sun superimposed to the centre with planets and moons geared on a single arm around the central axis, mounted on an ebonised base with domed clear plastic cover, 45cm diameter Note: the term orrery is a generic term for this type of instrument, named after Charles Boil, 4th Earl of Orrery, who had a planetary model made for him by John Rowley in 1712. Rowley had been influenced by a clockwork device constructed by Thomas Tompian and George Graham in around 1709, which had a small globe of the earth and an ivory moon to show the daily and annual motions around the sun.
