Victorian paper knife with high relief twist silver handle, vacant cartouche and scrolling engraved mount with ivory blade, total length measures 11 1/4 inches (28.5cm), hallmarked Birmingham 1892. Together with a smaller example with silver handle with bright cut engraving and mother of pearl blade, total length measures 6 3/4 inches (17.5cm), hallmarks very rubbed possibly Birmingham 1896. Both paper knifes are in good condition. There are some minor surface scratches to the silver, and some small areas of tarnish in the grooves of the decoration. The handle of the Victorian paper knife is at a slight angle to the blade. Both blades have a number of small notches and scrapes to them, but these are more evident and serious on the mother of pearl example. Both hallmarks are rubbed, but only that of the mother of pearl knife is illegible.
