A 19th century ivory panel carved in relief with figural dramatic scene and dragon finial (af), approx 18 x 11.5cm and a further contemporary relief carved panel with knights to foreground, approx 16 x 5.5cm (2). CONDITION REPORT Dragon finial to the first panel has been broken at the top, further general wear and tear, some losses and damage, natural hairlines etc throughout. The smaller panel has two holes to the right side.
A 19th century carved ivory farmer or peasant with character mark to base, height 11cm and two seated figures, the first a man holding a lantern, the second a man stirring a pot (all af) (3). CONDITION REPORT Standing figures hat has been off and crudely re-glued, the man holding lantern is loose to base and has lost the item hold in left hand, the third figure has lost an entire figure with only feet remaining, further damage, hairlines etc throughout.
A group of four Taisho period Japanese ivory figures, a gentleman with a peony, a gentleman with staff and peony, height 21.5cm, a gentleman with a zither in a bag and a female figure with fan, each mounted on Art Deco style mahogany plinths. CONDITION REPORT Man with lotus and staff has damage to the staff - 313g. Man with staff and peony has damage to end of staff - 333g.Man with lute has fine cracks - 369g.Lady has small knocks and marks commensurate wit age - 182g.Some detached elements present.
Two 19th century carved ivory figures, one of a man with staff, eagle and monkey, with character mark inset to base, height approx 19cm and another of a laughing man with rice bowl (both af) (2). CONDITION REPORT First figure has breakages and crudely re-glued repairs throughout including to both feet, monkey arm, staff, staff finial, and residual glue to base, the second figure ,missing his base, loose joint between upper and lower sections, prominent hairline cracks to head, general wear and tear throughout both figures.
A late 19th/early 20th century carved bone and ivory part pagoda/shrine, the dragon-carved doors enclosing Buddhist official before altar, with figural scenes carved to sides and reverse and further foliate detail throughout, character mark to base, 14.5 x 9cm (af). CONDITION REPORT Damage and losses particularly to upper section ie roof, this item is missing the lower section it was originally made with.
A Meiji period Mughal-style ivory elephant decorated in Shibayama style with semi-precious stones, on each side heavily encrusted with mother of pearl floral decoration, lotus blossom decoration to centre of the elephant's back and a peony decoration to the top of the head, red script marks to base, height 27cm, length 34cm. CONDITION REPORT Age-related wear, some splits to the ivory body, small age-related cracks to the trunk. Some small pieces of ivory missing, revealing the wooden carcass, some areas of mother of pearl floral decoration missing. Lacking some stones, mainly from under the elephant's mouth. A pair of 19th century carved ivory recumbent lions, length of each approx 13.5cm (2). CONDITION REPORT Hairlines throughout, the lion with open jaw with slight crack or gap spreading from the mouth right rear, general light wear and tear throughout, the other lion has had a loss and replacement piece to the base rear section from which spreads a hairline crack, nibbles to the paws and exposed edges etc.

λ A massive 19th century Chinese ivory vase, the rectangular body finely and elaborately carved, with four panels depicting the story of the cowherd Niulang and the weaver girl Zhinü, within cloudy rocky landscapes with pine trees, buildings and other figures, the neck with two further panels and with lion dog mask ring handles, on a scrolling foliage ground, the base with further playful dogs above a Greek key band, 44.5cm high, together with a hardwood stand. Provenance: An English Private Collection. The romantic legend of the two lovers Zhinü and Niulang is an ancient Chinese love story that has been told since the Han Dynasty. Zhinü was a weaver girl and Niulang a cowherd, and their love was not allowed, so they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver river (symbolising the milky way). Once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day. Their reunion is celebrated in China with the Qixi festival. The main panel (featured) on this vase depicts the couple secretly marrying in front of a pine tree spirit, the heavenly bridge can be seen at the top of the panel. click here to view the page turning catalogue
