The pistols with 20.5cm octagonal barrels engraved 'Fisher London' to the top edge, ramrods below, percussion cap firing actions with adjustable nipples, sliding safety behind the hammer, with engraved decoration to the side plate and hammer, with decorative 'silver' trigger guard, the walnut stock with finely cross hatched in four-cross in diamond pattern. Engraved Fisher to the side plate. 36cm overall. Contained in a fitted mahogany case containing a variety of tools and accessories including bullet mould, turn screw and other items. The case with flush fitting handle to the lid and ivory escutcheon, 7.5cm high, 48cm wide and 21cm deep.

One leg is a modern replacement, made of resin. The tip of one of the other original feet, slightly worn. There are other natural blemishes around the body in keeping with its age and material.

The horn of a rich striated walnut tone, finely carved in the form of a recumbent billy-goat or deer-like creature, with finely incised fur to its beard, mane and bushy tail terminating in three cloud-like scrolls, its front claws neatly folded one upon the other, the horns resting on its back, its spine clearly visibleHeight: 7cmLength: 7cmWidth: 4.5cmWeight: 65gThis extremely rare small cup is one of the finest examples of a small group of libation cups modelled in the form of billy-goat or deer-like creatures, dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. Three examples are illustrated by Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, London, 1999, p.83-84, cat. no. 56 & 58. The first, from The Water, Pine and Stone Retreat Collection, previously sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 25 November 1987, lot 490, is of particular interest as it bears both a Wanli reign mark and Bao Tiancheng seal mark, which helps date this group. The present example bears a strong resemblance to the cup in the Dr. Ip. Yee Collection, illustrated by Chapman. Two other examples of this group include a cup sold at Sotheby’s New York, 20th November 1973, lot 48 and another cup in the A & J Speelman Collection, sold at Beijing Poly Auction, 5.6.2011, lot 7139. Another similar shaped cup is illustrated on the Palace Museum website, 8.7-9cm., diameter., which is similarly designed as a dual-purpose piece.此拍品極其稀有罕見,是H.G. The natural striations of the horn have been superbly used by the carver to accentuate the fur of animal, with particular fine detail being visible on its mane, tail and back. There is a small repair to one ear, where the material used is darker than the original horn, approx 3mm. which has been done a long time ago. There are a few minor ‘dents' around the lower body (the largest 5mm) and one to the interior/underside.Viewing in person is recommended as it is a particularly beautiful example of the carvers art.

Prior to the catalogue photos taken, Daniel Stevens (the restorer of Roger Keverne) repaired a small section of the stalk of the base around the cup, approx. 1cm, replaced in resin. All of the geese flying around the rim have losses, the lotus flowers, one to either side, have some small ‘nicks’ to the petals. There is a small ‘dent’ to the interior rim of the cup.

(please see the natural light photos) There is a small loss to the horn of the chilong coming over the rim, to its horn, 6mm, and another two small losses to the chilong to the left, approx 10mm and 6mm.  The other chilong to the right has a small crack to its tail, which may suggest its been broken out and re-stuck. Around the body there are some natural imperfections in the horn which are evident from the photos. There are three old scale chips to the foot, the largest being 12mm. approx. There are two small natural imperfections which are visible to the upper rim. The interior of the cup is richly figured, with some age crazing in keeping with its age.

The interior of the cup  shows signs of great age, with vertical striations to the horn, with a few minor nicks and natural blemishes around the rim, visible on the photos online. There are a couple of small ‘worm’ holes nearer the foot rim, with other age associated cracks visible to the exterior. There are eight slashes across the base, and a circular ‘shadow’ to the horn where the interior of a foot rim is likely to have been. The cup has been reduced by about 20mm.

There are a few minor ‘nicks’ to the rim, one slightly proud to the touch, 2mm, seen in catalogue photo. There are some ‘whitish’ marks around the body which should clean off easily. The base is of a slightly irregular shape where the carver has made use of the natural material, which the carved key-fret border goes over.

A small section of the cloud scroll chipped, 5mm. Another small worm hole, near cloud scroll handle. A small section of the pierced foot, possibly broken and re-stuck. 5mm. There are five small blemishes to the interior, one a small worm hole, the others natural. There is a small nick to the rim, 3mm, evident in the photographs. There are other natural blemishes to the exterior, which have been carved over, two small worm holes coming through from the interior.

Some old breaks to the lower section of the handle, possibly re-attached, old restoration. The scroll terminal of the handle probably reduced, (the flower terminal, of low relief compared to the others of high relief would suggest this) but a long time ago as the patina is consistent with the rest of the cup. Other old chips to the sides of the handles and natural blemishes. Please refer to the light of day photographs

See similar illustrated in Keats, p. 176, Ill.202Condition report: Overall fading to dye consistent with age and use. Some pieces with small cracking near bases in the white set. The black set has cracking to bases on some pieces. Losses to both knight - on one both ends of the spear and one end of the spear on the other knight, also loss from the front of the horse.

A 19th century Indian provincial ivory chess set, one side stained purple, this bishop or wazier is portrayed as a mounted warrior, 7.5cm high maximum.Provenance: See: Frye Collection. Christie’s 29/7/78, Ill.339 Condition report: A full chess set of 32 pieces in total. Parasols from elephant piece are seperate but provided. Fading to dye on a knight and elephant in the black set, and glue marks to the base of some red pawns. Minor cracking to the top of one rook in the black set. Both elephants on the white set has discolouration marks and one with a slight crack to body and head. Some pawns have glue marks and some discoloured cracking lines to their bases. Both whte rooks have cracking which has discolured to the base and exteriors.
