"AN IMPORTANT RUSSIAN MINIATURE OF A VIOLINIST, POSSIBLY THE YOUNG MIKHAIL GLINKA, SIGNED I. GERIN AND DATED 1835. A finely executed watercolor on an ivory oval depicting a waist-up portrait of a well adorned seated young gentleman holding a violin bow and with sheet music on a stand before him. Signed in Cyrillic at mid right "?. ??????" (I. Zheren) and dated 1835. Verso with finely penned indigenous dedicatory inscription written in Russian, "To my dearest friend Sofia Nikolayevna Treskina with the fondest of memories, 31st of August 1835". Height 3.1 inches (8 cm). At present the lack of more extensive and clear biographical data provides limited insight into the life of the obviously well-connected and highly skilled miniaturist portrait painter who signed his works ?. ??????. It would seem that Ivan Gerin was likely the son of a French born artist by the name of Michel Gerin. Some sources indicate he was already doing portraiture work in the 1780’s. However it is known that in 1808, Ivan Gerin received the rank of Associate in miniature painting from the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy, and in the following year the rank of Academician in miniature and nature painting.Known works by Ivan Gerin reflect his status amongst the social elite as having been a sought out miniaturist portrait painter of the day. Included among his known clientele were Empress Maria Fedorovna, General-Field-Marshal S. F. Apraksin, Major-General M. E. Khrapovitski, actress N. A. Samoilova, and the famous Russian poet Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol. It is believed that Gerin had two sons, Ivan and Nikolai who followed in their father’s footsteps and were in their own right also accomplished artists. Besides the Hermitage, works by Gerin are held in the collections of the St. Petersburg State Russian Museum and other important museums of Russia. One can only speculate as to the recipient of this portrait miniature who is addressed on the inscription found on the reverse as Sofia Nikolayevna Treskina. Perhaps the daughter of Nikolai Ivanovich Treskin (1763-1842), the controversial Civil Governor of Irkustk who is known to have fathered eight children including two daughters."

Josef Hoffmann (Austrian 1870-1956) was a founding member of the Wiener Werkstätte with banker Fritz Wärndorfer, who funded the venture and fellow artist Koloman Moser. Founded in 1903, the Wiener Werkstätte was a design company who strived to elevate ordinary functional objects to works of art. The offered lot is a notable example of the group’s ideology and demonstrates Hoffmann’s keen understanding of proportion and materials. While functional as a dinner bell, due to Hoffmann’s aesthetically-pleasing streamlined design and use of expensive and decadent materials such as ivory and silver, the item can also be viewed as an object imbued with artistic intent, thought and handling. Hoffman’s designs and the unique items executed by Wiener Werkstätte strongly appealed to the Viennese upper-class who were drawn to the luxurious nature of the group’s one-of-a-kind objects d’art, such as the offered lot.For an identical bell, see Phillips de Pury & Company, New York, Design, March 3, 2012, Lot 28, illustrated.
