Lot 434

An 18th Century Ivory monture married with a 19th century double paper leaf, depicting Rebecca receiving a gift from Eliezer at the well. The verso shows a maiden watering roses, cupid lurking beneath. Above this and rather indistinct are printed words, in Spanish, ''La Hermosa, … nacer……dios…..''The monture is gilded and painted in floral designs in mainly blue and pink and the pierced gorge is backed centrally with mother-of-pearl. Guard length 25cm. Marriage of monture and later leaf. The gorge sticks show inconsistency at the right side, and repair to the guards, see also from the verso.

Lot 435

A Good 1830-40 Century Ivory Fan, depicting Venus in her shell chariot, the double paper leaf lithographed and mounted on ivory sticks, the guards being overland with panels of a light pink mother-of-pearl, with some quite regular piercing and silvering. The recto features a variety of scenes with couples paying homage to various goddesses, to include possibly Athena. The verso, with a central cartouche of young ladies dancing with glower garlands, is presented in mainly pastel colours, with two side vignettes depicting pleasant encounters in the countryside. Silver metal loop and red silk tassel. Guard length 29cm. A central gorge stick absent and a repair noted to the one next to the gap. The leaf shows some effects of this. Slight loss to the mop on the upper section of the lower guard. Probable replacement to the mop on the upper guard, colour slightly different.

Lot 436

An 1830-40 Fan, with a double paper leaf, brightly coloured to the recto and showing a rather romanticised young lady with delicate features to the centre, enveloping herself inside an oversized red flower head, to her right a winged cherub similarly deployed but with white veiling, and to the left, Cupid apparently sharpening his bow. Birds and flowers fill the reserves. To the verso, a trio of fashionable young women of the period with extravagant accessories, two holding masks. The monture, of ivory, is pierced and gilded to the gorge and the guards are mother-of-pearl, which are carved, pierced and inlaid with a variety of steel shapes. Guard length 22cm. Together with a card fan box bearing the label of a retailer. Finnegan's Ltd, London, Liverpool and Manchester; and An Early 19th Century Fan, with double paper leaf, each side with a romantic depiction of a lady in classical robes, and Cupid. The ivory monture is carved and pierced in classical fashion, the guards with a figure in the upper section. Guard length 21.5cm (2). Fan 1 - Some slights tears to the leaf on the recto and nicks to the upper folds. The verso, to the left, has some staining and damage. The MOP on the guards has losses to the inlays and the shoulder of the upper guards shows a crack which is most probably a repair, and the first stick in, is stuck to it. The guards appear a fraction too long? Fan 2 - Some wear and nicks to some leaf folds.

Lot 438

A Small Regency Bone Fan, the monture pierced, gilded and silvered. barrel rivet. The double leaf with a central cartouche, a pastoral depiction of young couples tending sheep, is embroidered with gold sequins and painted in the reserves with vibrant flowers. The recto is plain. Guard length 17cm; and A Regency Ivory Fan, with barrel rivet, the monture lightly pierced, the gorge tiny. The dark purple silk leaf is exquisitely embroidered with all manner of tiny gold sequins, stars, leaves gold beads, white beads, forming flowers, swags and borders. Part of the upper leaf, cut away, is backed with cream net. Guard length 18.5cm (2). Fan 1 - The leaf has been extensively restored, seen from the verso. One further repair on the recto the full width of the lower leaf. Some pinholes. Some loss to the sequins. Gilding dull with some losses. Both guards appear to have a tip panel missing, possibly MOP Fan 2 -The cream net is split on several folds

Lot 439

A Regency Ivory Fan, circa 1810-20, with silvering and gilding, carving and piercing to the monture. Barrel rivet. The silk leaf is richly embroidered with tiny gold sequins, bordering the leaf and also delineating each area of foliage and the two young girls who approach the altar of love with an offering of flowers. The verso is plain. Guard length 24cm. Splits to folds with some restoration seen on the verso. Some foxing as seen from both sides. One gorge stick has moved but is present. Upper guard is damaged, lower guard appears undamaged. Tarnish/dulling to the gilding. Delicate painting to faces.

Lot 440

A 19th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, and painted in gold and muted colours. The double leaf, signed to the recto, Durano, shows a young lady being serenaded by a musician the reserves painted in bold colours with flowers, arrows, and doves around the altar of love. The verso is relatively plain, with a border in green and a spray of flowers. The gorge sticks to the verso are plain. Guard length 22cm. Good strong colours, slight rubbing to the folds, generally clean and strong.

Lot 441

A Circa 1880 Ivory Fan, the gorge well and regularly pierced, the guards featuring unusual rope effect panels, all inset with silver metal shapes of varying sizes. The double gauze leaf, in cream, has been applied to the recto with a border and motifs of Brussels bobbin lace, to include flowers and butterflies. The verso is plain. The basic loop is adorned with a large cream silk tassel. Guard length 27cm; and An 1860-70 Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced monture, the design an elaborate lattice with flowers. The double paper leaf shows an elegant outdoor gathering, the ladies in elaborate 18th century gowns, many carrying fans, the gentleman in vibrant colours with long jackets and breeches, the reserves floral. To the verso, a simple riverside setting, with perhaps Italianate buildings and trees. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - The gauze is quite grubby. The gauze to the verso is splitting in places. Losses to the metal inserts. Fan 2 - The monture appears sound. The leaf, unusually lightweight, has some splitting to the folds and some repairs, mainly seen from the verso but also the recto to the very left.

Lot 442

A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with simple silvering and gilding, mainly of meandering stems with leaves, the double paper leaf with two colourful scenes surrounded by strong blue reserves. To the left, a couple of young ladies in their salon, reading what appears to be a letter from a beau. To the right, the beau calls upon one of the young ladies, who is taking a stroll accompanied by an elderly chaperone or relative. The blue reserves highlight further imagery, of Gods and cupid, in bold gold. The verso, decorated in gold on white, shows a scene of travellers in foreign lands, with their camels and tents. To each side, peacocks and rich gold reserves. Guard length 27cm; A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with simple gilding and well-shaped and carved guards. The double lithographed leaf shows a gentle scene of a family group beside a lake on which others are rowing. The relatively plain reserves are filled with leaves, flowers and foliage in soft green and brown. The verso, with an elaborate scrolling and floral design filling most of the reserves, features a central scene of an outdoor gathering, a grand lady being approached by a wealthy gentleman in the foreground. Guard length 27cm; and A Circa 1800 Ivory Fan, with carved monture, the guard detail very delicate and in panels. The small gorge is most delicately and intricately carved with figures. The double paper leaf is painted with a depiction of a fine lady in classical dress, being crowned with a flower garland by Cupid, his bow and quiver at his feet, in the presence of another finely dressed lady. The verso is plain. Guard length 24cm (3). Fan 1 Minor wear to some folds, really quite bright and clean. When closes the gorge appears quite bowed in the centre. Fan 2 - Some splitting to the folds and slight wear to the leaf. The leaf colour was probably gold at some time but is now quite dull/matt. Fan 3 - Very poor. The leaf is very dry and split. The paint colour is strong and the facial details very good. The monture lacks the middle section to the lower gorge and the upper guard is broken mid- way and there is some loss to the ivory. Two inner sticks stuck to the upper guard. Tiny losses to the gorge. This has been a beautiful fan.

Lot 443

A 19th Century Ivory Fan, the guards and gorge intricately carved and painted in pastel colours, resembling scrolling ribbons entwined around flowers. The double paper leaf features young people at leisure in the countryside, one boy greeting his dog, others picking flowers and making garlands. The verso depicts an 18th century lady seated beside a tree. Guard length 24vm. Together with a 19th century card fan box, the inner lid with a retailer's label for Dickens and Jones Ltd, Fan Specialists, Regent Street, London. Rubbing to many of the folds. Colour good.

Lot 444

A 19th Century Ivory Fan, mounted à l'Anglaise with a classical design of winged cherubs and angles in flight, making floral garlands, holding flaming torches, approaching the Altar of Love, full of movement, the whole in gentle pastel blues and pink and cream, with brown for definition. The verso is plain, save for colour to the ribs. Guard length 24.5cm. Together with a J Duvelleroy card fan box. Clean and sound.

Lot 445

A 19th Century Telescopic Ivory Fan, the guards plain, the gorge sticks plain but shaped, mounted with a lilac silk leaf to the recto and cream silk to the verso. The recto is applied with three Brussels bobbin lace motifs, two of large butterflies, the central motif being of classical form and bordered with flowers. Closed, guard length 18.5cm, extended, guard length 25cm; and A Late 19th Century Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, the double leaf in turquoise blue silk to the recto, applied with Brussels bobbin lace with a touch of needlelace for detail, forming the initials M.A.F. The verso is plain cream silk. Guard length 24cm (2). Fan 1 - The telescopic action works smoothly if opened with patience. Some light marking to the leaf and slight foxing to the lace. Fan 2 - Sound, generally clean with some discoloration to the bone.

Lot 446

A Late 19th Century Ivory Fan, with elaborate monture, gilded and silvered, carved and pierced, and double paper leaf. The recto features an elegant couple and daughter outside a simple cottage, in front of which a young girl uses a spinning wheel. The reserves are simply decorated with pale pink roses and gilding. The verso is relatively plain, in cream with pastel flowers and gilding, this gilding perhaps forming a name in the centre, ROSA? Guard length 27cm; and A 19th Century Bone Fan, with inlaid monture, lightly incised linear designs being offset by shiny silver roundels that glint in the light. The double silk leaf, in cream, is embroidered overall with tiny silver metal sequins, slightly larger and oval sequins forming flowers to embellish the top border. A simple narrow bobbin lace border is attached to the top edge of the leaf. The metal loop is finished with a cream silk tassel. Guard length 28cm (2). Fan 1 - Some slight splitting to upper folds. Fan 2 - The bone is dirty, some losses to the inlay, some losses to the sequins and some of the oval ones are tarnished.

A 3rd Quarter 19th Century Ivory Fan, the monture plain, excepting where the spray of roses painted onto the double silk leaf extends down onto the gorge. The verso is plain. Guard length 30cm; A Mid-19th Century Ivory Fan, carved, pierced, and gilded, the decoration to the upper guards and gorge in bands and quite complex. The double paper leaf depicts three young ladies and two gentlemen playing some sort of game in the garden. The reserves show water and a rural landscape. The verso is fairly plain with a simple river scene with trees. Guard length 27cm; and An Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, very elaborately carved and pierced, the tips with intricate flowers, the central section with four carved vignettes and one larger cartouche, all with figures, every section of the reserves extensively carved with flowers. Two guards and twenty-two inner sticks. Guard length 18.5cm (3). Fan 1 - The leaf has suffered, most folds either splitting or have split. Fan 2 - Slight loss to the gilding, which remains generally bright. Slight wear to the leaf at both sides. A repair attempt visible from the verso, where it can also be seen that a gorge stick is stuck to the guard. Fan 3 - Missing sticks to the left, the vignette is incomplete. Damaged tip to one central stick. Ribbon defective. One stick to the right missing a small section, two others have slivers missing

A Plain Late 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, consisting of 11 wide inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 19cm; An Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, pierced overall with regular designs, twenty-five inner sticks and two guards. Pointed tips. Diamante in the rivet. Guard length 17cm; and A Slender Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, the tips decoratively shaped, and carved in pairs with birds and leaves, and centrally a cartouche with a figure. The lower sticks are pierced in several bands. Twenty-three sticks and one and a half guards, see condition report. Guard length 16.5cm (3). Fan 1 - One stick missing the very end as would be seen at the river. Ribbon requires replacing. Fan 2 - Ribbon defective. Slight losses to some of the pierced inner sticks. One further stick stuck to a guard, guard broken low down. Fan 3 - One guard missing the top section and stuck to the next stick in. Loss to piercing on one guard.

A Late 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, with wide sticks, the guard plain, the inner sticks elaborately pierced with repeated classical designs. Fourteen inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 22cm; and A Late 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, painted with a spray of flowers in soft blues, a white flower with dark green leaves adding focus to the design. Fourteen inner sticks and two guards. Ivory loop. Guard length 22cm (2). Fan 1 - One further stick is stuck to the lower guard, and there are likely to be more missing. Loop incomplete. Ribbon defective. Fan 2 - Clean. Appears sound.

A Late 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, with wide sticks, the recto painted with a country maiden finger outstretched to encourage a small bird to land. The verso is plain. Sixteen inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 23.5cm. Nothing noted.

Lot 452

Three Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fans, all carved and pierced, two in regular designs in bands, the main difference being the shape of the tips, and the third fan with pointed tips, the recto colourfully painted with flowers, the verso with delicate pink roses and a colourful bird with outspread wings. All with barrel rivets. Guard lengths all approx. 15cm; and An Early 19th Century Carved And Pierced Ivory Brisé Fan, the sticks with shaped tips. Guard length 17cm (a/f) (2). Fan 1 - The fan with straight tips needs new ribbon. The painted fan has two damaged tips, one sliver missing to an inner stick, the paint is slightly rubbed, slight losses to the piercing. Fan 2 - Missing upper section to one guard, most other sticks have damage. For salvage/repair use

Lot 453

An Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, with shaped tips to the two guards and 26 inner sticks, with a blue glass stone to the rivet. The fan is decorated to the top border with a sweep of gold paint, designs within, the ribbon half -painted with gold to match the border two thirds down. Detailed designs in gold and colour are painted between the tips and ribbon, with the main body of the fan painted with delicate pink rosebuds and dark green leaves, the whole giving a very light and airy feel to a dainty fan. The verso is plain. Guard length 17cm. Generally very good.

Lot 454

A 19th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced and painted in pastel colours to complement the mainly pastel shades used to paint the pastoral scene on the double leaf. A young man plays the bagpipes to his lady. This central scene continues down into the painted gorge. The gorge is further painted with two side vignettes, one with a young man, the other a maiden, and smaller ovals feature bows and arrows. The verso is plain. Barrel rivet. Guard length 21.cvm. Together with a good fan box lined in yellow velvet, the exterior of light brown leather, with gold scrolling detail. Minor staining to the leaf best seen from the verso. Some rubbing to the paint on the lower guard.

Lot 455

A Regency Ivory Fan, with carved and intricately pierced monture, the guards quite classical, the gorge with a central oval of a figures in a carriage and another figure in front of a building. Two side vignettes are carved with figures. The double velum leaf is completely plain to the verso, the recto with a colourful scene of a couple with a small child, the lady clutching the man's arm, seemingly worried that the lady and older man standing in front of them is going to take their child. The scene is bordered with still life and other classical designs. Guard length 25cm; and An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the monture plain save for mother-of-pearl thumb guards. The double paper leaf is classically painted with two ladies in flowing robes and a small boy, within strong blue and red borders. The verso is painted with fruit and leaves. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - The leaf is quite dry and rubbed in places, from the verso it can be seen that most folds are supported. Fan 2 - Slight loss to the upper thumb guard. Leaf completely split on two folds, the worst being centrally where there is side damage, and some other losses to other areas, consequently hard to determine who the figures might represent.

Lot 456

Paris And Helen Leaving for Troy: An Early 19th Century Ivory Fan, with delicately carved and pierced monture, the gorge with a central carved cartouche of cupid, arrow poised to shoot, with a lady, and two further diamond vignettes containing winged cherubs. The boldly coloured double paper leaf shows Paris arriving by sea to take Helen, the wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta, with him to Troy, thus sparking the Trojan war. The verso, in cream, is decorated with elegant painting of leaves. Guard length 24cm. Together with a 19th century woven silk covered fan box lined in pink, gilded to the inside lid with ''J Duvelleroy, Paris, By Appointment, LONDON: 167 Regent Street 167. Some loss to the ivory on the guards, both may have been repaired at the shoulder. The leaf holds excellent colour but is very dry. Images show splits to the leaf. Verso shows at least one patch. Silk box fairly grubby but catch works well.

Lot 458

An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced and painted. The double velum leaf is elegantly painted with a cornucopia, the floral spray tied with a blue ribbon, some further flowers to the right. The verso is plain save for some delicate flowers in the centre. Guard length 29cm; and An 18th Century Ivory Fan, The Monture Chinese Export, Qing Dynasty, the guards well carved, the gorge pierced and carved with initials, within a central oval. The double gauze (?) leaf is embroidered with differing shapes of small sequins, in swags. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm (2). Fan 1 - Generally quite poor. Losses to the carving on the guards and in the central gorge cartouche. Leaf damaged in numerous places, with splits, losses and some crude patching to the verso. Note that the guards stand very slightly proud of the leaf. Fan 2 - The leaf is splitting on several folds, and is dirty.

Lot 459

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, French, the double leaf velum to the verso, the recto most likely of paper, with a central cartouche of a finely dressed couple, a winged cherub supporting the lady's train, another couple and their white dog approaching Cupid at the Altar of Love and surrounded by winged cherubs, Venus above. Possibly an actual marriage. The cartouche is bordered with tambour embroidery and gold sequins, as are the two small side vignettes, one depicting the Altar of Love the other with classical object. The verso is plain. The monture, gilded and silvered, is carved and pierced in a classical manner with a central oval to the gorge; A Mid-18th Century French Fan, with ivory monture, the guards simply carved with details painted in bright blue, the gorge sticks painted in a similar fashion with the addition of a central oval with floral detail. The double leaf with a central cartouche and two vignettes shows a couple with the lady's chaperone and two other figures in the countryside. The verso is plain; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with double paper leaf, a simple painted scene of a young couple near a river with cottages on the opposite bank. The verso is plain. Guard length 22.5cm (3). Fan 1 - The leaf has suffered and there are losses to the recto, it being quite dry. The gilding/silvering is dull. Fan 2 - Extensive splitting to the leaf, with substantial restoration already having been undertaken. Fan 3 - The leaf is fairly well rubbed in places. Some splits to the folds. Some brown marking. Foxing seen on the verso. Tear and repair to a full fold near the centre. Patching to another. One stick missing. Repair to upper guard. Modern replacement rivet.

Lot 461

A Mid-18th Century French Fan, the monture of carved and pierced ivory, the upper guards featuring a figure, the gorge sticks formed with three vignettes. The double paper leaf shows a central courting couple and two side vignettes with single figures. The leaf, embroidered with sequins, is also quite unusually decorated with applied gold foil mainly in leaf form. The verso is plain cream save for a river bank with a tree. Guard length 27cm. Together with a blue silk lined coffin box. Some light soiling. Some nicks to the tops of some folds. Slight losses to the carving on the upper guard and the top of the lower guard has period nails indicating earlier repair.

An 18th Century Printed Fan, hand coloured, the slender ivory monture fairly plain with some simple shaping. The gorge is further decorated with flowers and fruits and ribbons, mainly in shades of red and blue. The double paper leaf depicts country activity with couples courting, one lady collecting fruit, and a boy relaxing with his dog, the costumes bright and detailed. The verso is en grisaille showing a maiden with basket relaxing in a clearing. Guard length 25cm. Some nicks to the folds. Colour good. Some small tears to the leaf on the verso.

Lot 463

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with deeply carved upper guards and lightly carved gorge, all silvered and gilded. The double leaf features a magnificent and colourful painted peacock with tail outspread, tambour embroidery and sequins emphasising the feathers. To the left, another peacock looks on in admiration…. or perhaps with bad intent, as a pea hen stands to the right. The reserves are decorated with finely painted flowers and to each side some extravagant foliage. The verso is plain; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced monture, unadorned. The upper guards are delicately carved with flowers, with smaller versions within the gorge. The double silk leaf is embroidered with gold sequins on the recto and plain on the verso. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - Staining and several splits to the folds. Loss of gilding and silvering to the monture. Fan 2 - To the left, the first gorge stick is stuck to the guard. Monture clean except for a slight yellow stain on the upper guard. Leaf pretty clean and strong. Some sequins missing.

Lot 464

A Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, the monture silvered and gilded, carved and pierced. The double leaf depicts a gathering of gentlefolk watching others being ferried out to a sailing shop, most likely in Italy judging by the vegetation. Two side vignettes show fisherman. The leaf is embroidered with gold sequins and silver tambour embroidery. Guard length 27.5cm; and A Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, the recto featuring a central cartouche of a lady dressed in fine costume seated in the garden, her tiny diary open, smiling pensively. Vignettes to the left and right feature a gentleman and a lady in similar attire. Sequins border these portraits and meander elsewhere on the leaf, filling the reserves. The guards and gorge are pierced, the gorge sticks of alternate design. Unusually the guards are also inset with diamantés. The verso is plain. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - Some loss and dulling to the silvering, some splitting to the folds. Fan 2 - The silk top layer is really quite shattered and the sequins help to retain it. One gorge stick missing a section. Loss to the diamantés.

Lot 465

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with velum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the upper guards carved and pierced with a figure, bird and flowers, the gorge gilded quite strongly to complement the gold around the borders. A courting couple are alone in the centre, to their left and right cherubs play with flower garlands and a pair of white doves. Blue ribbons and colourful flowers fill the reserves. The verso with colourful floral spray is otherwise plain. Guard length 27cm. Splint repair to the back of the lower guard. Most of the ribs appear to have been removed/replaced/restored, reason not clear.

Lot 466

An Early 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, each guard carved with a female figure, the gorge carved and pierced with several bands of different designs. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, has a simple depiction of a seated lady, possibly Venus, with Cupid at her feet, his bow and arrow cast aside as he attends to the ties on her gladiator sandals. The verso is plain. Guard length 25cm. Gorge stick missing both sides. Folds rubbed. Some staining.

Lot 467

An 18th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, with twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards, the whole painted in pastel colours with a young lady playing music on a strung instrument to a couple seated under a tree, the reserves painted with flowers and blue ribbons with bows. The lower section is further painted chinoiserie style with three figures who appear to be floating in pink water lilies. The verso is painted in a similar fashion with a simple landscape and flowers. Tortoiseshell thumb guards. Guard length 21.5cm. Contained in a 19th century card fan box Rubbing to the paint particularly to the verso. Lacks ribbon. At least 4 sticks have losses to the tips. One stick missing, to the outer border, right, of the central cartouche.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with simple guards and a band of piercing across the centre of the gorge. The cream leaf mounted à l'Anglaise is painted in fairly pastel colours with, possibly, David and Abigail, and two further side vignettes each painted with a lady in the countryside. Flowers and light gilding to the reserves. Guard length 28cm; and A Mid-18th Century Bone Fan, with the velum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the guards and gorge carved, pierced and gilded, the leaf plain to the verso, the recto depicting a pastoral scene of two women and one seated gentleman, the latter at ease whilst listening to gentle music. The reserves feature side vignettes, the borders gilded, one with bees and a hive, with fruits of the fields, the other with a bird within a gilded cage, birdcage and similar country produce. Guard length 28.5cm (2). Fan 1 - Some nicks and patching to the leaf seen from the verso. Some gorge sticks not secured. Repair to the upper guard. Fan 2 - Very clean leaf, dulling to the gilding. Break to the top section of the upper guard, loss to the top section of the lower guard.

The double paper leaf has foil appliqués on the leaf, including shells, birds, winged cherubs and flowers, restricted to the borders leaving a plain cream centre. The verso has a pastel painting of a traveller and a flower seller. Guard length 27cm; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with carving to the upper guards and linear gilding to the gorge. The double paper leaf, découpé, is painted in the centre with a couple seated each side of a table, playing a game. To each side a further painting, one of a young girl and the other a young man. Interspersed with the découpage are rows of roses climbing up poles. The verso is painted with three simple outdoor scenes. Guard length 26.5cm (2). Fan 1 - The upper guard is detached from the leaf. Splitting to a few folds. Grubby. Fan 2 - Losses to and dulling of the gilding. Some splits to the folds, some repaired. Some small stains seem from the verso.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, silvered and gilded to the upper guards and the gorge, carving to the guards being quite intricate. The double silk leaf is painted with delicate flowers, birds and a butterfly in pastel colours. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm; and An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the monture painted in pastel colours, each guard having intricately carved panels, a portrait of a gentleman to the upper guard with a small ivory figure below, the lower guard carved and painted with a different figure, and small flowers. The gorge features several carved cherubs, flowers and scrolling, with gold highlights. The double paper leaf is simply painted with a couple in fine dress, seated on a rock in a rural setting, with two further perhaps more rural folk making conversation. Simple buildings with birds along the roofline are behind. The verso is plain save for a simple drawing of fencing and vegetation. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - The gilding is dull. Some very pale staining to the leaf. Fan 2 - The leaf has been repaired in places. The first stick in to the left is stuck to the guard. The other guard shows a repair at lower level. A sliver of ivory is missing from the upper part of the lower guard.

A Fine 18th Century Carved and Gilded Chinese Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, most likely unused as the stick numbering is clear and the ribs are clean. The guards are delicately carved in different sections. The gorge features several shaped designs and details are gilded; and An Early 18th Century Ivory Monture, with a bulbous head, lacking a leaf. The guards are each carved with a figure and flowers and both are tipped with mother-of-pearl. The twenty inner sticks continue up into ribs. Guard length 27.5cm (2). . Fan 1 - Two gorge sticks to the left of centre appear to be missing. Fan 2 - Clean.

A 18th Century Chinese Ivory Export Fan Monture, Qing Dynasty, the gorge intricately carved with a central oval containing either a name of many initials. The guards are carved in panels with buildings and vegetation. Together with another, the guards more florally carved, the gorge sticks carved in a regular, classical pattern. Guard length 28cm each fan (2). The montures have been used but are in good order.

Rural Romance: An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with bulbous head, fine and intricate carving of figures and animals to the monture, mounted à l'Anglaise with a velum leaf, depicting a lady in woodland setting releasing a bird from a cage, only for it to be caught in the hand of the handsome gardener, with whom, despite the class difference, Cupid (to the right) leads her to fall in love. The Herm to the back centre shows the God Pan, the personification of lust. The verso is plain save for a border design. Guard length 27cm. Loss to one carved gorge stick, and not available. Painted faces quite exquisite. Otherwise the paint is generally rubbed.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards carved with a large figure and backed with coloured foil. The gorge sticks are carved in panels with two side vignettes. The double paper leaf is painted in dark colours to the recto, with Chinese robed figures, and buildings, the reserves with exotic trees and flowers, many details highlighted in gold. The verso is painted with three gold floral sprays. Guard length 25.5cm; A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, French, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the gorge with some colourful painted figures. The double silk leaf, painted, with the addition of gold and silver threads, is also scattered with sequins. A central cartouche shows a young lady dancing with flowers, the side vignettes with young men playing the music to accompany her. The verso is plain; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender monture, the upper guards carved with flowers, the gorge sticks carved in linked circles, most detail painted in pastel pinks and green. The double leaf, seemingly of paper backed in pink silk, depicts two young couples in the countryside, a further couple in a vignette to their left, and a pensive lady to their right. The verso is plain. Guard length 26.5cm (3). Fan 1 - The first stick in from the right is stuck to the guard, the same to the left. One gorge stick has an old repair which is now weak. The gilding and silvering is dull. Some nicks to the upper folds on the leaf. Fan 2 - The upper guard lacks a section to the tip. The silvering is dull. The leaf is extensively split on virtually all folds. Fan 3 - The upper section to both guards is detached, due to breaks lower down. Both sections have part of the leaf still attached. One guard lacks the very tip. Subsequent damage to the sides of the main leaf and rubbing to folds. The painting and colour remain good.

Lot 475

An Early 18th Century Printed and Lightly Coloured Paper Fan, the ivory monture relatively simple with shaped gorge sticks and some pale pink painting of roses to the upper guards. The double paper leaf is delicately painted in the chinoiserie style, depicting a riverbank scene with various figures. Centrally, a man of import is being cooled by his attendant using a large fan. Seemingly, local people await the arrival of a loaded boat, a bridge crossing a small river tributary to the left side. The verso is plain. Guard length 25cm; and A Mid 18th Century Bone Fan, the upper guards carved and pierced with a bird, the gorge pierced with simple designs. The double leaf is painted in Chinoiserie fashion in mainly pinks and strong blue with a family in the garden, children at play a junk passing the riverbank, a bird perched on a branch, and detailed flowers and butterflies finishing the scene. The verso has a simple spray of blossom. Guard length 29cm (2). Fan 1: The monture appears sound but the leaf is worn in places with nicks to the folds. Some repair visible from the verso, and both sides have some obvious stains. Fan 2: The upper guard is repaired from the verso. Several leaf folds have been repaired, some still need attention

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the upper guards and gorge painted in sort greens and ruby. The upper guards are carved with a bird, the gorge painted with musical instruments and scores. The double paper leaf is découpé, complementing a chinoiserie scene of rural life featuring a couple, a horse and colourful birds in the trees. The verso is plain. Guard length 29cm. The leaf is patched as seen from the verso, and there are further splits to the folds. Some light staining.

Guard length 29cm; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender monture, the upper guards carved and pierced, the gorge more delicately, the double paper leaf with decoupage. The recto shows two couples cavorting in the countryside, next to a ruined building. The verso shows a simple rural scene. Guard length 28cm (4). Fan 1 - The silk leaf is splitting on some folds. Loss to one of the thumb guards. Fan 2 - Loss to one mop thumb guard. The leaf is splitting on several folds. Holding to the light, it is evident that this fan has sequin decoration stitched on, which is long since gone. Fan 3 - One gorge stick replaced, not pierced. Another is repaired from behind. The decoupage is generally sound save for one section top right next to the guard, patched from behind. The leaf is a little grubby. Fan 4 - The leaf has been shortened to the side and gorge sticks are missing. One guard has a replacement section at the top.

Lot 478

An Early 18th Century printed and hand coloured double paper leaf mounted on slender ivory sticks, a rural scene of daily life tending sheep and gathering produce. The intricately carved ivory monture is painted in a dull pale green, over which delicate painting and gilding is applied. The slender gorge sticks are in pairs and alternating with a single stick of different shape. The verso is relatively plain cream. Guard length 26cm. Repair to the upper guard with a brass plate. The gorge shows some loss to the ivory and at least two sticks have been reinforced from behind. Some splitting to the leaf and earlier repairs.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double paper leaf elegantly embroidered with silver sequins. The verso is ostensibly plain but has the irregular addition of swirls of metal shapes. Guard length 27cm; and An Early to Mid-18th Century Fan, the velum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise on relatively plain ivory, the guards having some linear detail to the upper section and some shaping near the head. The recto features an oval cartouche with a colourful scene of a boy and older man in the desert, more figures and two camels in the background, most likely a biblical representation. Two diamond shaped side vignettes depict simple rural scenes. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm (2). Fan 1 - Upper guard broken and repaired at the shoulder and upper section, one gorge stick with similar restoration. The first stick in from the left is stuck to the guard. Fan 2 -Repair to the lower guard, and one gorge stick as it meets the rib. Some slight staining

Lot 481

A Mid-18th Century Dutch Ivory Fan, the velum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the monture gilded and silvered with small detail to the gorge. The recto, with a central cartouche of a courting couple in the countryside with their sheepdog, sheep, bull, goat and dog, away from buildings and a windmill in the background. Two side vignettes are painted with urns and rural implements. The reserves feature blue ribbons and bows and some very natural flowers to include roses and parrot tulips. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm. Both guards are broken to the upper section, one with a piece missing. The colours are still bright and attractive, the leaf now being a little limp, with some staining.

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with an unusual and elegant carved and pierced, painted and gilded monture, featuring, amongst others, shells and butterflies. Mother-of-pearl is laid behind some of the carving on the gorge. The paper leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows Rebecca receiving jewels from Eliezer at the well. To their right, two travellers arrive with three camels. The verso is plain save for a simple rural scene. Guard length 29cm. Together with a green 18th century fan tube, unlabelledVery light foxing to the verso. MOP missing from the gorge. Generally clean and bright.

Lot 483

A Fine 18th Century Ivory or Bone Brisé Fan, painted in bright blues and pink, further embellished with applied gold foil in the shapes of tassels and flowers. A pretty maiden with delicate features is painted centrally, to her sides large urns of flowers are placed, with various swags and cornucopia filling the reserves. Twenty-six inside sticks and two guards. Tortoiseshell thumb guard. Guard length 21cm. Seemingly one stick missing as the “archway” over the maiden is not balanced, and her skirt is unfinished. Possibly a second stick missing to the left outer edge. Rubbing of paint to the lower guard. Some indication that this fan could be bone but hard to see with the painting. Ribbon sound.

An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with fairly bulbous head, and plain monture. The double leaf is painted in strong greens, blues and red, showing a couple, their pose reminiscent of Rinaldo and Armida, a woodland setting near water, some pumpkins and other produce at their feet, the latter perhaps suggesting the alternative of Permona the Goddess of the Harvest? The verso has a delicate floral design in soft gold. Guard length 27cm. Some splits to the folds and some restoration to others seen from the verso. Good colour.

Lot 485

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender monture finely pierced, the gorge with the addition of a carved central cartouche with figures, the guards with gold foil showing through. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted in bold colours with David and Abigail and two other gentlemen, outside ruins, a ruined tower in the distance. The reserves are delicately painted with small flowers along the top border and gilt highlights, the decoration becoming darker and stronger to the sides. The verso has some simple floral sprays in gold. Guard length 26.5cm. Together with a period mottled green fan tube. The leaf has had restoration, seen from the verso, and one gorge stick is not in the correct position. Some other folds are splitting and need attention. The colour is however very good and the leaf seems less rubbed than might have been expected.

The designs are bordered with very tiny sequins in gold and pale green, and flowers are outlined in metal thread embroidery. The verso is plain. Guard length 27cm; and An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with Chinese export monture, Qing Dynasty, the guards delicately carved with pagodas, figures and foliage, the gorge carved and pierced with a shield enclosing a basket of flowers, the remaining sticks intricately pierced and featuring birds and flowers, the whole painted in pastel colours. The double paper leaf in complementary colours, shows young people at leisure in the countryside, a young boy walking his dog. The verso depicts a fisherman. Guard length 27cm (4). Fan 1 - Lacks the rivet and the lower section to one guard, the upper section damaged. Silvering dull The leaf is splitting on virtually every fold. Fan 2 - Lacks one guard and the other is damaged. Lacks gorge sticks. The leaf is shattered. Some element of salvage for other restorations. Fan 3 - Leaf very poor. Lower guard detached and broken in two. Fan 4 - Damage and repair to one very central gorge stick and two sticks stuck to the left guard. The leaf has some nicks to the upper folds.

Lot 488

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with cream vellum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, the monture quite plain save for some shaping to the lower guards and gorge. A central cartouche depicts cherubs beside the altar of love, one with a dog to heel. Oval vignettes to each side feature further cherubs, with additional small vignettes to the edges. The reserves are filled with swags in reds and blues, the whole giving a light and airy feel to the leaf. The verso is plain. Guard length 29cm. Generally quite clean and bright but staining here and there, see verso. Some slight rubbing to folds, note central cartouche area.

Lot 489

An Early to Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the gorge and guards well carved and pierced, the gorge with figures and birds. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted with a charming picture of a dog, chained to a tree stump, looking mightily guilty as its mistress admonishes it, presumably for having chased a bird which has escaped from a birdcage. Local country folk who appear to have been engaged in the rescue look on. Guard length 28cm. Some nicks to the top of folds. Some small holes along the bottom border of the leaf. One gorge stick has a chipped shoulder. Break/repair to the top quarter of the lower guard, which is also stuck to the first stick in.

Lot 490

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender sticks heavily gilded and silvered, the gorge with three vignettes. The double paper leaf depicts a young couple in the countryside, the lady holding a white bird which she proffers to the gentleman, who is holding a birdcage. To the left a windmill, to the right a couple stand in the garden in front of a rural home. The turquoise blue reserves feature a trompe l'oeil of white bobbin lace and very stylised and intricate flowers. The verso with reserves in cream, features a simple cottage with hills in the distance. A ruby silk tassel is attached to the shaped loop. Guard length 28cm. The gilding appears quite bright and has possibly been retouched. Lifting in places. The leaf has numerous splits to folds and some patches of repair but is generally strong. Some flaking of the paper centrally seen from the verso. Pinholes visible.

Lot 491

Erminia Seeking Tancred: An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture elaborately piqué with steel in various sizes and shapes, carved and pierced in particular on the gorge, with three figures and buildings. The cream vellum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows a gathering of a man and children. Erminia, princess of Antioch, on horseback, disguised in the armour of the warrior Clorinda, seeking the warrior Tancred, passes a seated shepherd weaving a basket, two small children playing instruments and an older boy carrying a cane. The verso is plain. Guard length 27.5cm. A break to the upper section of the upper guard. A slight split to one gorge stick near the shoulder. Possibly shortened/missing 2 sticks as the gorge design is incomplete, and there is play on the rivet. Some staining to the left as seen from the verso. Slight crumpling.

An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with carved guards, plain gorge and fairly bulbous head. The velum (?) leaf is mounted à l'Anglaise. The recto, with cream reserves, shows a band of country folk returning from the fields, one on horseback, a dog at the rear. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm. Folds fairly rubbed, break/repair to the upper guard.

Lot 493

A Finely Carved Early 18th Ivory Fan, the guards with figures, flowers and mother-of-pearl thumb guards, the gorge with elegant piercing and carvings of figures dancing. The double velum leaf is painted with three separate scenes, from the left, a man gazing at his lady, seated, who holds a basket of flowers, to the centre a lady handing a rose to a younger lady who has two young children at her knee, and to the right, a seated lady looking quite melancholy. The verso is plain. Mother-of-pearl thumb guards. Guard length 27.5cm. Some dark stains to the verso. Some very slight foxing on the recto. The first stick in to the right is stuck to the guard, the guard being repaired under the thumb guard.

Lot 494

Moses: An Early 18th Century Biblical Fan Leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise on simple ivory sticks, the guards being carved with figures. Hidden in the bulrushes of the Nile, Moses was found by the Pharaoh's daughter and grew up in the Egyptian Royal Family. The velum leaf shows a family group with Moses as an infant, painted against a dark teal reserve. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 28cm. Some rubbing to the folds and the paint. Very slight splitting to some of the folds.

Lot 496

Diana The Huntress: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks and guards, two carved panels in the Chinese style in each guard, the gorge sticks plain save for simple gilt painting of branches and leaves. Diana the Huntress stands in the centre of the double paper leaf, knife in hand, her cloak lined with animal skin; a female archer draws back her bow, and in the background two more women carry a dead deer on a pole. The verso is plain save for a simple rural scene. Tortoiseshell thumb guards. Guard length 29.5cm. Good colour. Some damage/wear to the leaf, some nicks to some folds. See particularly the first fold in from the right hand guard.

The Triumph of Galatea: An Early 18th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, painted with Galatea riding a dolphin accompanied by a Triton and a water nymph. The Cyclops, Polyphemus, is seen seated on a great rock in the background, playing a syrinx. A river God rests upon his urn in the foreground. Delicately painted chinoiserie panels to each side and beneath the cartouche. The verso is a simple etching of the recto. Tortoiseshell thumb guards. Guard length 21cm. Seemingly two sticks to the left missing as panels do not match the right. Rubbed paint.

Lot 498

A Striking 18th Century Courting Fan, ivory monture, the gorge painted with chinoiserie, the guards in a similar fashion with the addition of mother-of-pearl to the tips and a further panel below. The double leaf of velum (?) depicts a courting couple wearing sumptuous 18th century costume, the lady resting her fan atop her voluminous deep pink skirts. The verso, painted with a simple red rose, has also a painted gorge. Guard length 29cm. Very strong colour. One panel of MOP missing, from the lower guard. Some rubbing and wear to the leaf. Some rubbed folds and slight paper loss to bottom edge of the leaf. Fan seen to be slightly warped when closed.

Lot 499

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the substantial monture heavily carved and pierced and gilded, opening to a full half circle. The upper guards feature a gilded figure. The gorge sticks alternate between ornate wide sticks with roundels and narrow sticks less extravagantly decorated. The central cartouche, backed with mother-of-pearl, features gilded figures. The double paper leaf shows a man being received by a King on his throne, the queen beckoning him forward. Another richly dressed lady sits behind the newcomer and soldiers are in attendance beside the king. The verso shows a maiden in the countryside with a winged cupid aloft behind a cloud. Guard length 26cm. Together with a later basic card fan box. The leaf is fairly well rubbed, and crumpled in places; the colours remain good.
