The Return of Jephthah: A Fine Early to Mid 18th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, painted most unusually en grisaille with pink touches for faces and other exposed flesh. The detailed scene depicts the return home from war of Jephthah, with his men, his daughter waiting to greet him, her musicians behind. Elsewhere the fan is painted with blue urns and with small scale and differing scenes. The ''gorge'' shows a similar scene. The verso shows a large bridge crossing a major river, various grand buildings in the vicinity, and people going about daily activities on horses and in boats. The ''gorge'' on this side depicts eastern scenes with palm trees and rural aspects. Tortoiseshell thumb guards. Twenty-eight inner sticks and two guards. Contained in a 19th century card fan box. Guard length 21.5cm Purchased in 1966 and exhibited several times in the UK: at the Opening of Chichester museum in 1967; also exhibited at the ''Welsh Treasures Exhibition'' at Cardiff Castle (11th Nov to 11th Dec 1987) in aid of Save The Children and organised by Lady Crickhowell for Princess Anne (The Princess Royal), and the Guest Loan Exhibit at the 54th Chelsea Antiques Dealers' Fair, 9th to 20th March 1982 at the Chelsea Old Town Hall, London. Le Marriage De Moye È De Sèforas: A Fine Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with guards applied with white mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell panels, the latter with designs in gold metal, the gorge painted in fine and delicate detail in strong colours with several Chinoiserie scenes. The double velum (?) leaf most likely shows on the recto the marriage of Moses to Zipporah, one of the seven daughters of Jethro, a Kenite shepherd and priest of Mirian. See the Book of Exodus. The verso shows a well-dressed couple and a boy outside with ruins in the background. The lady carries a folded fan. Bulbous head. Guard length 29.5cm. Rubbing to the paint. Some small losses to the MOP and tortoiseshell. One large MOP panel on the verso is replaced. Slight damage to the lower leaf, recto/verso and some more loss to the leaf higher up on the verso, also some patching to the folds. Some folds rubbed and splitting slightly.
A Fine 18th Century Ivory Fan, with an unusual topographical central cartouche, a flotilla of ships leaving harbour, a large town to the right, possibly Naples, the Lanterna del Molo on the left. The double velum leaf with a pale pink reserve is further decorated with a wide trompe l'oeil of bobbin lace. The verso is plain save for a simple painting of the countryside, in blue. The monture is carved and pierced, the guards with figures, the gorge more classically. Guard length 29cm. Upper guard has a loss to the tip. Both guards appear repaired about one third down and the leaf at these points also has issues, see verso. Both sides of the leaf have been affected by humidity and are brown and dry.
A Fine 18th Century Italian Grand Tour Fan, the ivory monture elaborately carved and pierced, the central gorge cartouche with chinoiserie figures, a diamond vignette at either side with further figures, surrounded by flowers. The upper guards are carved with a figure and animal. The double velum leaf depicts Saint Peter's Square, Rome, two side vignettes, one with the Pantheon, another a stone wall and circular building. The reserves are filled with classical figures within boldly coloured borders. The verso is plain. Guard length 27cm. Good Colour. The upper guard is broken. Several gorge sticks are missing and the leaf has been cut down. Note from the images how some sticks are stuck to the guards. The leaf is quite crumpled.

The recto shows the Bay of Naples by day, Vesuvius smoking in the distance, the verso a different view, both very detailed depictions. Text below each scene is abbreviated but probably reads ''Vedute di Napoli a Posillipo''. A fair amount of rubbing, making the text hard to read. Chip to the tip of one guard.
A Fine 18th Century Italian Grand Tour Fan, with a large depiction of the Pantheon, Rome, on the recto and a simple ruin on the verso. The vellum leaf is mounted on ornate ivory sticks, the guards each with a figure, the gorge with a central carving of a courting couple surrounded by delicate flowers. Guard length 27cm. Good colour. Very very slight rubbing to the leaf. Damage/repair to the lower guard, seen from the verso where a rear section of leaf is torn, and from the recto where the leaf has been re-secured.

Guard length for Mandarin fan 27.5cm; for the first brisé 14cm, for the second brisé; and for the fan case 30cm. Please see the condition report. Mandarin fan: the leaf is very rubbed and torn. First “brisé” generally in good order. Second “brisé” a loss to the tip of one guard noted. Indeed, BOTH brises seem perhaps to be combinations of fan gorges of different periods/styles.
