A Victorian rosewood and inlaid stationery box, having a well appointed satinwood and coromandel veneered interior, with fall front opening to a red leather writing surface, fitted with a leather lined drawer and pen tray and with red leather bound books and blotter and ivory mounted implements, the lid interior inset with brass inscribed presentation plaque dated 1892 to the Rev: Thomas Turner Lancaster, and a leatherbound hand written testimonial to same on the occasion of his leaving the Parish of Heaton Mersey. Box dimensions closed 44.5cm wide, 32.5cm high
A finely carved fruitwood plaque, Italian, 17th century, with a printed paper label to the reverse, 'Pear-Wood plaque, in ebonised frame-Italian, decorated with a military trophy carved in low relief from The Shattock Collection' and another label with the words 'Art Treasures Exhibition, 348 Museum'. together with a silvered metal plaque, Flemish, 17th century, depicting Bacchus and Ariadne and a carved Ivory plaque depicting the Resurrection, probably French, in an earlier style (3) Italian plaque; 11cm. x 7.5cm., Flemish plaque; 5.5cm. x 7.8cm., Ivory plaque; 8.4cm. x 6cm. It is highly likely that the Italian and Flemish pieces in this lot were formally incorporated into a cabinet or casket.
A walrus ivory gambling ball, probably 17th century, possibly a 'teetotum', multi-faceted, each facet engraved with a number diam. 4cm. Literature For a discussion see A. H. Pinto, Treen and Other Wooden Bygones, London, 1969, p. 229 and for a mahogany example see pl. 233. Pinto (op. cit. p. 229) writes 'A teetotum, or totum, a many-faceted spinning top, with each side numbered, serves in many respects, the same purpose as thrown dice, but if made 'true', there is an equal chance of any number turning up, which is not the case with dice...'
