An ivory toothpick case, early 19th century, the basket weave top with gold studding and central inscribed plaque, with blue velvet lined interior, 6.2cm wide and another example, the concave lid with gold inlaid anchor, 8cm wide (2)Condition report: Basket weave example split to the rear section of the lid and a smaller split to the rear section of the base. The anchor example has some minor lifting to the gold inlaid line border. Lining quite worn with the upper section missing, suggesting there was possibly a mirror there originally.
A rare early-19th Century East India (John) Company ivory chess part-set, possibly Berhampore, one side left natural and representing the East India (John) Company, the other side stained green and representing Indian army, comprising figures riding elephants, horses camels, a pair of unmounted oxen, and soldier pawns. King 9cm high, pawns 6cm high, (one pawn on each side missing). Sold together with a hand-written note: "These chessmen were brought from India by Capt. John Bastard,R.N., given as a present to his brother Edmund P. Bastard - whose initials are engraved on the saddle cloths of the Elephants. Provenance: By direct descent.
