John Gatecliff (1771-1831) of Hull - Ship's Captain and latterly Commodore of the Humber Pilots - a fine portrait miniature 7cm x 5.5cm on ivory of the gentleman aged 44, with reverse glazed lock of hair monogrammed 'JG' in seed pearls, Together with a fascinating unpublished autobiographical account of his life including his time as a French Prisoner of War from 1806 to 1814. Gatecliff was born in Cooks Row Scarborough the son of a Ship Master and Owner moving to Hull in about 1775.
