^ American infantry officer’s sword with “Ketland eagle” pommel c 1805, straight single edge blade 31.75” cut with a single fuller and stamped on the back edge at the forte WK&C (for William Ketland & Company), brass hilt with traces of gilding overall, eagle’s head pommel and knucklebow and quillon with elaborate acanthus ornament, star shaped langets with trophies of arms in relief, ivory grip carved with geometric ornament. Good untouched condition, some age honest wear. Note: See E A Mowbray “The Eagle Pommel Sword” 1988 pp 100-107 for an account of these swords.
^ 1831 Pattern general officer’s sword of Major Richard Baker, First Portuguese Regiment of Queen’s Lancers, British Auxiliary Legion, regulation blade 30” etched with crowned WIVR, oak wreaths, crossed sword and baton, and A LINNEY, 23 Regent St London Warranted, regulation hilt with gilt brass mounts, 2 piece ivory grips, bullion dress knot (well worn), in its lacquered gilt brass regulation scabbard engraved ‘SWORD OF MAJOR RICHARD BAKER, FIRST REGIMENT OF LANCERS, BRITISH AUXULIARY LEGION, PORTUGAL AND SPAIN, 1833 TO 1837’. Fine condition. Note: sold with extensive research material. Amos Linney moved to 23 Regent St in 1834. Richard Baker born 1810, commissioned Lieut. 1st Portuguese Queen’s Lancers Nov.1832; entered Spanish Service as Capt. July 1835 in same regiment; promoted Major March 1837. Joined the New Zealand Company 1839, emigrated there, one of the first settlers in Wellington (Baker Street named after him), district magistrate, commanded local volunteer cavalry corps, watercolour painter, died 1854.
^ Good 1796 pattern type cavalry officer’s sword c.1815-1816, regulation blade 30” blued and gilt, etched with crowned GR, Royal Arms (1801-1816), maker’s Cooper & Craven, Warranted, together with a standing cavalry officer, trophy of arms and assorted foliage, gilt brass stirrup hilt with lion’s head pommel and lions heads on langets retaining most original gilding, diced ivory grip, in its leather scabbard with gilt copper mounts (gilding worn). Good condition. Note: Cooper & Craven are recorded working as sword cutlers in Moor Street, Birmingham 1815-1816.
^ Fine English hanger c.1770 of the type favoured by naval officers, slightly curved single edge blade 26” cut with two fullers, one piece green-stained ivory grip carved with a lion’s head pommel above spiral flutes, silver crosspiece (no visible hall marks) chased with military trophies, reversed quillons with lion’s head finials. Good condition and age patina.
^ Rare French officer’s sword spadroon in the English manner (à monture à l’anglais) c.1800 probably for a naval officer, flattened diamond section blade 32.75” blued and gilt for half-length and etched with sun in splendour, laurel wreath, military, floral and foliate trophies, gilt brass 5 ball hilt with bright cut decoration, 5 ball side bar enclosing small oval plate, ‘cigar band’ to reeded ivory grip, in its brass mounted leather scabbard. Good untouched condition, gilding worn.

^ Spanish naval officer’s sword c.1770-1790, straight double edge stepped blade 29.6” etched NO ME SAQUES SIN RASON – NO ME ENBAINES SIN HONOR together with the Spanish royal arms and flowering foliage, brass stirrup hilt retaining traces of gilding, chiselled lion’s head pommel, langets engraved with fleurs de lys, one piece diced ivory grip. Good condition, some age wear.
^ Rare Scottish-Indian officer’s sword probably for cavalry use, early 19th century, slightly curved single edge blade cut with a single fuller 31.5” stamped DEAKIN on back edge, steel ‘cross-bar’ hilt with down-turned quillon finials and langets of 1796 cavalry pattern, spiral ivory grip bound with twisted silver wire, iron mounts and swollen pommel of compressed form, grip with steel edges and bound with steel patrol chains including a lanyard loop, in its leather covered wooden scabbard with iron mounts including chape of Indian pattern. Good untouched condition
^ Very rare documented East India Company junior officer’s (midshipman’s) undress coat and naval dirk c.1825 of W.R.Campbell, made from blue wool lined with printed cotton and white linen, blue velvet notched collar, lapels and cuffs, twin tails each with 3 pointed pocket flaps and pockets, 8 pairs of bright gilt buttons stamped Jones & Smith - Bedfordbury with EIC lion above fouled anchor. Fine condition, a little moth damage. Together with his E.I.C. officer’s dirk (mentioned in correspondence), curved single edge blade 10” etched with Britania shield trophies of arms, flowers and foliage, gilt brass mounts comprising recurved quillons with chiselled lion’s head langets and pommel, knuckle chain and diced ivory grip, in its gilt brass mounted leather sheath with belt sprung belt clips and paper label inscribed in India ink ‘Midshipman’s Dirk H.E.I.C. Good condition. Note: William Rankine Campbell (1808-1862); 1st voyage 1825 in HCS Marchioness of Eley to Madras and Bengal in as midshipman; 2nd voyage 1827 same ship and destination as 6th mate; 4th mate of the Farquharson going to China by 1830; 3rd mate Lowther Castle in 1832; 1833 writes from Whampoa as third officer. Left EIC service, commanded brig Hero to Australia (arrives Freemantle 11th November 1835) and back. Left the sea by 1839. Provenance: descendant family of W R Rankine; thence Christies, Glasgow, sale 31.05.1989 lot 32. Sold with research notes, correspondence and photocopies Indian Office records.
^ Presentation walking stick 35.75”, ivory handle carved as a dog’s head, inlaid glass eyes, Malacca shaft, silver ferule H.M. Birmingham 1876 made to imitate a pair of belts, chased with foliage and engraved Presented to Sergt. Major W.Sayer, by a few county volunteers in recognition of many years service as Assistant Secretary of the Norfolk Volunteer Service Association, Decr. 13th 1886, Malacca shaft.. Good condition.
^ Victorian combined walking stick pump-up air rifle/shot gun 37”, made in 2 parts with an air reservoir and barrel section screwed together of black japanned steel with a 142 bore rifled brass barrel which unscrews to reveal a 60 bore brass shot barrel, wooden ramrod with brass tip secured into the walking stick’s screw on brass ferule, open sights, square cocking port, turned ivory pommel. Good condition
^ Assorted objects made from or containing ivory comprising: an octagonal box with fluted lid and spherical finial 4”; a parasol handle carved with Kaiser Wilhelm (?) 8.5”; a turned wooden egg cup with hollow turned ivory egg; an ebonised wooden drum 2.25” match holder with turned ivory drum sticks; a pierced steel tool; carved ivory cheroot hold carved with owner’s initials JB and roses, 4.25” in case; a turned oak pocket watch holder with small ivory fittings; a brass taper holder with ivory handle 18.5”; a thermometer; 4 boar tusks, and a carved wooden pipe bowl in the form of an eagle’s head with ivory beak. Average good condition.
^ Good African Abarambo or Mangbetu tribal dagger c 1900, spear shaped blade 5.75” with raised and flattened central rib, one piece ivory of good colour hilt carved with a crosspiece, 4 swollen grip bands and a rounded pommel, in its leather sheath with woven seam and with iron windings. Good condition.
^ Good African Abarambo tribal dagger, late 19th Century, spear shaped blade 6” with broad flat central rib, one piece ivory hilt of good colour carved with raised grip bands and with a stylised head for the pommel, in its leather sheath with woven seam and iron windings around the top. Good age patina.

^ Good African Nubian tribal arm dagger, early 20th Century, blade 5.5” engraved with Arabic inscriptions together with a fish and a bird, nicely carved hardwood hilt with ivory band and turned ivory pommel with a silver mount, in its leather sheath with crocodile skin bands and leather arm band: and another similar, blade 6.75” engraved with 2 short Arabic inscriptions, a scorpion and a fish, ebony hilt with turned ivory pommel, ivory layers and an engraved silver pommel button, in its leather and reptile skin sheath with woven leather arm band. Good condition and patina.
^ African Nubian tribal arm dagger, early 20th century, broad blade 9.25”, nicely carved hardwood hilt with ivory bands and turned ivory pommel with silver mount, in its leather sheath with crocodile skin bands and leather arm band; together with a pair of Sundanese daggers each with turned ivory grip and double edge blade in their worn leather sheaths. Average good condition.
^ Presentation folding knife c.1870,` blade 5” stamped BLYTHSWOOD KNIFE and signed Chapman Glasgow, further signed tools comprise button hook, awl, corkscrew and small blade, together with scissors, tweezers and spike each contained within the 2 piece ivory grips, inlaid silver rectangle engraved JOHN LINES from LADY BECTIVE. Good condition, minor cracks around 2 rivets.
^ Large folding pocket knife c.1890, blade 4.5” with fancy back edge, stamped JOSEPH HAYWOOD & COMPY, GLAMORGAN WORKS, SHEFFIELD with kettle mark, further signed tools comprise bradawl, boot hook, turnscrew and awl, together with scissors, tweezers and needle within the 2 piece ivory grips. Good condition.
^ Ebonised wooden table cabinet, probably late 17th century, comprising fall front and 6 drawers flanking central cupboard, all inlaid with ivory stringing and plaques engraved with mounted figures, animals, pastoral and martial scenes, 12”x6.25”x9.5” tall including bracket feet, with key. Good condition.
