Y English School (18th century) Mary Alsager, wearing grey dress and white shawl, her hair powered and upswept Watercolour on ivory, oval 2.3cm (0¾ in.) high In a gilt frame, engraved Mary Alsager, died 10th Dec 1822 Condition Report: Some light discolouration to the blue background. Surface dirt lightly scattered throughout and largely concentrated to the framing edges. The reverse of the ivory sheet with a small patch of glue residue (approx. 3mm). The hair backing with some loss and a large patch of glue residue visible. The miniature and hair backing have come away from the mount and the lot is in 4 pieces (front and back of mount, hair detail backing, and ivory miniature). Will need re-framing. She married Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall, 1st Baronet on 30 March 1789. Condition Report: Some very light surface dirt/mould which should be easily removed with a soft brush. Light surface scratches throughout. Some loss to the paint at the extreme edges, and this is most heavy to the lower left edge. Small area of possible retouching to the sky left of the man's head. The miniature as been laid down to the card backing. The mount with some nicks to the corners and general wear throughout commensurate with age, would benefit from being re-glazed.
