Stained red and natural, the kings and queens with foliate finials, pierced crowns and foliate carved baluster support, the bishops as mitres, the knights as horses' heads, the rooks as towers bearing banners, the pawns as finely-carved balusters with bud finials. λ A pair of French Dieppe ivory figures of Night and Day after Jean-Jacques Pradier, each carved in the form of a scantily clad maiden accompanied by a cherub, carved with flowers and stars, each on a verde antico socle, the underside of one with an old handwritten paper label inscribed 'DAY AND NIGHT BY ALBERT TOFT FROM THE FITZROY COLLECTION 100 GUINEAS', late 19th / early 20th century, the figures: 29.5cm high, overall: 34.3cm high. λ A small continental ebony and ivory table cabinet, with gilt metal mounts and inlaid with stringing, the top with a swing handle above a pair of doors marquetry inlaid with eagles, revealing an arrangement of eight drawers decorated with strapwork, the central drawer with an architectural front with a figure, the insides of the doors both decorated with guards, South German or Italian, late 17th / early 18th century, 16.7cm high, 20cm wide, 13cm deep.
λ An Italian ivory book cover mount in Byzantine style, relief carved with the Virgin Mary, within a raised bead, leaf and lambrequin decorated frame, with traces of gilt and polychrome decoration, probably 17th century, Venice, 12 x 11.5cm, in a later velvet mount. Provenance: Purchased by the current vendor from Kunsthandel Dr. W. Seppman of Haltern, whilst exhibiting at the Olympia Fine Arts Fair, London on the 16th June 1985, as 17th century Venetian. A copy of the original receipt is available. The Virgin's facial features in this present lot bears close resemblance to a 10th / 11th century ivory statuette of the Virgin Hodegetria in the Metropolitan Museum (accession number 17.190.103). However, the carved leaf border points to more of an Italian and probably Venetian origin and the merging of the Eastern and Western Byzantine styles.
λ An Anglo-Indian hardwood writing box, inlaid with bone, ivory and ebony with scrolling leaves and with urns of flowers, the base with a chevron border, with sunken brass military style handles, the hinged lid revealing stationery compartments, a tambour lidded compartment and a hinged lidded fold-out slope revealing two drawers, late 19th / early 20th century, Hoshiarpur, 16cm high, 44cm wide, 29cm deep.
