ËœA CASED .600 CALIBRE PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE, MID-19TH CENTURY, THE LOCK SIGNED DOOLEY, LIVERPOOL with German browned twist octagonal swamped sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, folding back-sight, engraved breech decorated with a stag, inlaid with a gold line and with platinum plug, scroll-engraved case-hardened breech tang, signed scroll-engraved case-hardened lock fitted with hammer en suite, double set trigger, figured walnut full stock carved with foliage in relief about the rear ramrod-pipe and the trigger-guard, the tang enclosed by a neo-rococo moulding involving a warrior profile, chequered grip, the butt enriched with engraved staghorn pellets, inset with a mother-of-pearl urn-shaped plaque beneath, the left with raised cheek-piece inset with an engraved ivory stag vignette and carved with a stag set upon by a pair of hounds behind, and, on the right, with patchbox with sliding cover decorated with a further stag scene on the right, German silver mounts comprising openwork side-plate, trigger-guard with finial of shaped outline, butt-plate with matching tang, three ramrod-pipes and fore-end cap, gold escutcheon engraved with the owner's crest, and brass-tipped iron ramrod: in its fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, the lid with flush-fitting carrying handle engraved with the owner's name, Gilbert H. Philips, on the outside and with trade label inside, complete with horn flask, oil bottle, nipple-wrench and powder measure 60.7 cm; 23 7/8 in barrel This gun appears to have been cased and built by Dooley around an existing German barrel, stock and mounts. This maker is recorded at 11 Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, circa 1843-57.

Two Yomut Turkmen asmalyks, Turkmenistan, early 20th century, the first 2ft. 5in. X 4ft. 0.74m. X 1.22m. With tiered woollen tassels to the lower end and ties and tassels to the top corners. Varied palette including two shades of blue, bottle green, apricot and ivory. The second asmalyk 2ft. 2in. X 3ft. 4in. 0.66m. X 1.02m. With tiered woollen tassels to the ends and sides and with remains of plaited wool ties to the top corners and the triangular top. Some colour run. (2)
Caucasian long rug, possibly Karabakh, south west Caucasus, second half 19th century, 8ft. 9in. X 3ft. 10in. 2.67m. X 1.17m. Overall wear with corrosion to browns; small crease marks; some repiling in places. Note the central column of five octagonal medallions each with a centre of confronting arrowheads; dark blue field with small filler ornaments; ivory leaf and calyx main border and medachyl outer guard. The confronting arrowhead design is illustrated in two rugs in Bennett, I. Op cit. Pp. 140-141; pl. 153 & 154 where possible attributions are discussed. Lustrous wool, good colour and soft handle.
Kuba geometric medallion palas (kelim), north east Caucasus, late 19th/early 20th century, 10ft. X 5ft. 7in. 3.05m. X 1.70m. Some wear with corrosion to dark brown in places; small surface marks. A very handsome palas with dark blue field and good variety of colour. Note the single tiny animal in the top left ivory medallion. Cf. Petsopoulos, I. Op cit. P. 244, pl. 288 for a palas of very similar design, but with a red field and lacking the small animal of our piece.
Rug by the Kashkuli tribe of the Qashqa'i Confederacy, Fars, south west Persia, circa 1900, 7ft. 11in. x 4ft. 10in. 2.41m. x 1.47m. Overall wear with losses to ends; small holes; some crease marks. Note the comical upright birds, especially in the central ivory medallion. Velvety wool and good range of colour.
Hamadan kelleh, Feraghan area, north west Persia, early 20th century, 12ft. 3in. X 6ft. 4in. 3.73m. X 1.93m. Overall wear and corrosion with some lighter coloured areas in the field, possibly as a result of cleaning; three corners rewoven; small repairs. Note the attractive ivory main border.
Good Panderma prayer rug, west Anatolia, circa 1920s, 5ft. 11in. X 4ft. 1.80m. X 1.22m. Note the beautifully drawn floral motifs in the wide ivory main border; the abrashed blue mihrab with pale gold and pale green floral panels above the arch. Tape sewn down both ends verso. As is usual with these prayer rugs, it is woven with the pile in the opposite direction to the design. A most attractive rug.
Ersari Turkmen 3 x 4 gul chuval with brocaded plainweave back, south west Turkmenistan, late 19th century, 3ft. 2in. X 4ft. 11in. 0.97m,. X 1.50m. Overall wear; holes to the base; slight damage/repiling to left side; slight colour run to plainweave back. Note the row of tree-like motifs in the lower elem; scant tiny ivory and apricot highlights to the chemche guls and in the minor guards. Velvety wool and rich palette with shades of deep blue and green. A large chuval with relatively soft handle and original plainweave back.
Kuba rug, north east Caucasus, early 20th century, 6ft. 6in. x 3ft. 3in. 1.98m. x 1m. Some wear with old moth damage especially to the ivory main border left side; slight damage to lower end. All over stylized 'butterfly' and flowerhead/medallion design in wide variety of colours on a dark blue field with an ivory lupine type animal left side centre and a human figure in the lower left corner.
Chinese soft pink silk robe wioth double fold-back sleeve bands, late 19th/early 20th century, finely embroidered in coloured silks with all over flowering plants, butterflies, bats, fruiting and flowering branches; black silk ribbon embroidered butterflies and flowers repeated in the sleeve bands which are lined with ivory satin embroidered with butterflies and flower sprays, gold coloured metal toggle fastening; lined with bright green silk. Some fading and water marks in places; slight fraying to collar binding.
Fachralo Kazak double ended prayer rug rug, south west Caucasus, second half 19th century, 6ft. 11in. X 4ft. 8in. 2.11m. X 1.42m. Overall wear, heavy in places; corrosion to browns; holes, tears and fraying with 'bites' to sides; losses and tears to ends. Ivory centre medallion with inner red medallion on a lustrous mid to pale blue shield shaped double ended mihrab. Ivory medallion main border. Cf. Bennett, I. Op cit. P.42 pl. 23 for a very similar central medallion. In need of sympathetic conservation.
Six Sindhi Baluchi topi (caps), embroidered in coloured silks, metal threads and shisha-work (mirrorwork), north India/south east Pakistan, 20th century, four in ivory with silver coloured metal thread, one lined printed cotton and two in brown cotton with maroon embroidery, one lined with printed cotton. Approximate circumference 19in.-21in. 48cm.-54cm. With shaped fronts. Some wear to edges. (6)
Uzbek warp faced ghudjeri, Uzbekistan, late 19th/early 20th century, 8ft. 4in. X 5ft. 10in. 2.54m. X 1.78m. Woven in nine widths joined horizontally. Note the top band with two rows of camels and humanoid figures in ivory and apricot. All the other bands are woven with geometric designs in a similar palette. Fabric binding to both long sides.
Axminster carpet, England, 19th century, 23ft. 5in. x 15ft. 6in. 6.14m. x 4.73m. Hand knotted with all over Shah Abbas design on a walnut brown field. Overall wear, heavy in places; with tears, holes and rips; some repairs with patches verso; small reweave to centre. This most attractive carpet was clearly used in a grand dining hall as can be seen from the pattern of the wear either side of the centre of the carpet. Superb range of colour throughout including ivory, light blue, pink, mid-gold; bottle green, mid-red, greens, orange and browns.
Two Baotou-Suiyuan rugs, north west China, circa 1920s-30s, the first with three floral sprays on a dark blue field, 5ft. 10in. X 3ft. 2in. 1.78m. X 0.97m. Slight losses to ends; tape to each end verso; the second, ivory field with all over flowers and foliage in shades of blue, 5ft. 10in. X 3ft. 1.78m. X 0.91m. Overall wear with losses to ends. (2)
Chinese lady's informal robe, 19th century, red silk satin finely embroidered with three roundels of differing flowers to the front and to the back above a sea-wave border with auspiicous symbols; one similar floral roundel on each shoulder; the narrow ivory satin sleevebands embroidered in coloured silks and metal thread with flowers, berries and auspicious objects, lined with pale blue silk; plain rounded neckline with red silk fastening. Lined with pale pink silk damask. Some fraying to lining at top of collar; surface/water marks in places; some wear and fraying to edges and hem. Note the tailor's or fabric maker's hand written label to inside front right hem. .

Heriz area rug, north west Persia, early 20th century, 3ft. 10in. X 2ft. 6in. 1.17m. X 0.76m. And an Anatolian(?) rug, circa 1930s, 4ft. 9in. X 2ft. 7in. 1.45m,. X 0.79m. Losses to ends; small damage to top right corner. (3)
Ghiordes prayer rug, west Anatolia, second half 19th century, 6ft. 5in. X 4ft. 3in. 1.96m. X 1.30m. Overall wear with some corrosion; slight losses to ends. Note the narrow ivory bands framing the field and the ivory details throughout would appear to be white cotton. For similar rugs see Zipper & Fritzsche, Oriental Rugs, Vol. 4. Two Baluchi rugs, Khorasan, north east Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, the first with all over trellised guls on a camel field, 5ft. 11in. X 3ft. 1in. 1.80m. X 0.94m., overall wear with corrosion to dark brown; losses to lower end , the second with two columns of hooked stepped guls, with ivory brocaded flatweave ends, 6ft. 5in. X 3ft. 3in. 1.96m. X 1m. Together with a fragmented Yomut Turkmen 4 x 4 gul chuval face, Turkmenistan, early 20th century, 2ft. 6in. X 3ft. In. 0.76m. X 0.94m. Overall wear and corrosion; borders missing each side; losses to lower elem; hanging loops to top edge. (3)
