A rare 19th century Indian Bowie (hunting) knife with turned ivory handle and silver mounts by Arnachellum, Salem in original brown leather sheath, the silver pommel engraved ' Presented to the Zemindar of Suptour by Captain Burne SFG, May 1870'. Active in the mid to late 1800's in the city of Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, Arnachellum was considered a top producer of knives for the Indian market as well as overseas travellers. The ivory on this knife shows some signs of wear commensurate with its age and use but is of the finest quality.
