Neither son married and his daughter died young. He was promoted Captain on 18 Dec 1875 and served in the 4th (The King’s Own Royal Lancaster) Regiment.  In 1876, he was serving with the 1st Battalion in Gibraltar, which would explain his service in Morocco (1877-78) where he helped the Sultan form an Army: hence the award of this presentation sword.   He was eventually promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and died at 86 Cadogan Place, London, aged 64, on 6 Dec 1908.
