The Ships of Old England, 1875, hand-painted ivory brisé fan, comprising 16 sticks each depicting an iconic British historical figure, e.g. a Druid, the Black Prince, Henry VIII, Nelson, Britannia, etc., each with appropriate sailing vessel above (except Druid and Britannia with a rowing boat and steam ship respectively), including HMS Victory, and various shells and seaweed specimens below, lettered in gold 'The Ships of Old England' (rubbed), final stick painted with shells and signed and dated 'A.D. Lucas 1875' in black ink, 1 stick slightly chipped at right-hand edge (barely visible from front), the sticks joined with cream silk ribbon, ivory suspension loop, 22.5 cm (8.75 ins), housed in a silk-lined gold-paper covered fan box (lid slightly broken at one end)QTY: (1)NOTE:Albert Dürer Lucas (1828-1919) painted mainly meticulously detailed pictures of flowers and foliage, sometimes incorporating butterflies and other insects. His father was the highly successful, but eccentric, sculptor Richard Cockle Lucas (1880-1886) who believed in fairies and liked to ride through the town in a chariot, whilst dressed in Roman costume. Lucas junior was based in Chilworth, Romsey, from 1880 and later in Southampton from 1890. He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the London Salon, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Scottish Academy. Examples of his work can be found in Southampton City Art Gallery.
