RARE SET OF FOUR SOAPSTONE INLAID 'STORY OF THE WESTERN WING' PANELS QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD assembled as two boxes, each with one panel forming the sliding door opening to reveal another panel beneath, each panel inlaid in coloured soapstones with the couple Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, the top panels showing the man courting the lady in a traditional architectural setting, the bottom panels showing them in amorous embrace (4) each panel 24.5x19.5cm (excluding wood frame) Provenance: Private Canadian collection. Note: The Story of the Western Wing, also translated as Romance of the Western Chamber, is one of the most famous Chinese dramatic works. Written by the Yuan dynasty playwright Wang Shifu and set in the Tang dynasty, it tells the story of the young couple Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying consummating their love without parental approval and outside of the bond of marriage. Hailed as 'The Chinese lover's bible', the story has inspired Chinese public imagination for centuries, and has been adapted across a broad range of artistic media: from paintings, woodblock prints, porcelain to ivory carvings. Soapstone inlaid panels from the Qianlong period such as the present lot however are extremely rare, and have almost never appeared on the market. China Guardian sold a similar set of four panels, which however does not include erotic scenes, on 15.11.2011. Another set of ten panels from an unnamed private Chinese collector, similarly arranged into 'romantic and erotic' pairs, was exhibited in 2007 in Beijing.

Ω A finely turned ivory ball game or 'bilboquet' , early 19th century, 19cm high, 7cm wide The origins of the game bilboquet are somewhat uncertain although there are documents placing the game as far back as 16th century France. Designed for one player, the game was supposedly invented to train children s hand to eye co-ordination in hunting cultures with the aim being to throw a tethered object into the air and catch it on a pin. Records testify to bilboquet being particularly popular in the Royal courts of Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries through their depiction in paintings, including a portrait of the Masters Blair, by Thomas Beach, (signed and dated 1769) portraying Charles and Henry Blair, the Children of Charles Blair and Lady Mary Fane, in a wooded landscape holding a bilboquet (formerly with Mallett). Please note, this lot may be subject to CITES regulations if exported from the EU.Cites Regulations Please note that this lot (lots marked with the symbol Ω in the printed catalogue) may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Ω A rare Chinese export carved bone model of a pagoda, 19th century, with seven storeys , each level intricately carved with pierced walls and gallery with a fluted roof hung with gilt pendant bells, of each room centred by a small figure, the base within a fenced stylised polychrome garden with an elaborately carved and decorated gateway, with a group of painted figures carrying ceremonial batons, retaining the original pine stand, 61cm high 26cm wide, 20cm deep, with losses and damage During the 19th century, the principal centre in China for the manufacture of export wares such as the present lot was the city of Guangzou (or Canton as it would be known in the West after the 1839-1842 Opium War). Situated on the Pearl River delta near the South China Sea. Canton was culturally and economically the most important city in south China, and a hub of trade in all manner of artefacts, including ivory. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it had become fashionable for English landed gentry to create decorative buildings and follies in their gardens and estates, particularly of eastern design. Perhaps the most notable English example is the pagoda at Kew Gardens of 1761-2, built as a surprise for Princess Augusta, the Dowager Princess of Wales and mother of George III. The designer, Sir William Chambers, had worked previously as an employee of the Swedish East India Company, during which time he spent several months in Canton. Whilst there he made architectural drawings of typical buildings which he later published as a book of Designs of Chinese Buildings (1757). His pagoda at Kew was very well received, and went on to inspire further examples, such as the three-storey version built at Alton Towers in the 1820s.
