A pair of Royal Worcester porcelain vases of globular form decorated in the Persian style with coloured flowers on an ivory ground, within relief decorated blue borders, Reg No 86395; together with a similarly decorated pear-shaped two handled baluster vase, puce printed marks, date code for 1891, 4 3/8in high and 6 1/2in high respectively. An early 19th century Chinese ivory chess set, the white King and Queen modelled as European royal figures, the red Chinese, each raised on carved baluster stem with pedestal foot, minor damages, height of King 4 3/8in; together with the original black lacquer chess and backgammon board, the edges decorated in gilding with scenes of Oriental figures in landscapes, gilding with very little wear but patches of lacquer lifting through damp, with slight loss, 16 5/8in x 16 1/2in extended.
Colonial India. A pair of Fiddle pattern table spoons, engraved with the crowned royal cipher VR and on the reverse Government House Madras; a Victorian ivory handled bread fork; a bone handled letter opener (4) . A faint crack in the ivory/bone handle of the bread and pickle forks but all in otherwise fine condition
An ivory mounted four piece tea service, of heavy gauge and angular form with outset "organic' limbs and feet, jug 19cm h, maker E & S, Sheffield 1939 & 46, 75ozs gross. Some staining and cracks to the ivory handles through use, each piece engraved with the initial letter E. In fine overall condition
Four Austro-Hungarian silver and silver gilt snuff and other boxes, including an oval example, the ivory inset lid with a plaque carved with frolicking children, the largest embossed with a bacchanal, 12. 5cm diam, some spurious 18th c marks; an embossed silver gilt hairpin box, by Deakin & Francis, Birmingham 1893, 21ozs gross (5) . A decorative group in generally good condition albeit with some wear, the gilding 20th c, no serious faults and no other damage or repair.
Two George III gold inlaid ivory toothpick boxes, 8 & 8. 5cm l . Larger box - the medallion to the lid originally with a miniature or locket, now contains a late Victorian photograph of a lady, also a small repair to the back of the lid above the hinge, crudely carried out in nickel, the smaller box retaining only part of the gold mount, the stringing missing, each has a replaced, mirror to the underside of the lid.
A Victorian carved ivory desk seal, the oblong cornelian matrix with an intaglio crest in silver shank chased with flowers and leaves, the finely turned ivory baluster handle with a pommel of carved roses, tulips and other flowers and overlapping leaves, crested by a rosette, 10cm h. In excellent condition, no restoration. (See lot 895 for illustration).
Two 19th century bone Stanhopes, each turned in the form of a monocular and with different female nude full length micro-photographs, 1. 5 and 2cm l . A few typical faint cracks, as to be expected with age. A small chip to the narrow part of the turned ivory of the housing of the smaller stanhope, both in overall good condition.
A Gentleman, in a green coat before sky, ivory, oval, 3. 8 x 3. 2cm, in a gold slide, and on 18th c fishskin covered case (2). In excellent condition, the miniature undisturbed in the original mount, the slide with a later brooch fitting, the fishskin case also in fine condition. (See lot 945 for illustration).
English School, c1780 - A Gentleman, wearing his powdered hair en queue and in a grey coat, ivory, oval, 3. 5 x 2. 6cm, in a gold slide. Tiny rubbed area above the sitter's shoulder which does not detract from the overall appearance, in otherwise fine condition, the ivory free from cracks or warping, in the original gold slide which has been adapted as a pendant. (See lot 945 for illustration).
B Bennet-Alday a young woman, in a pearl necklace and turquoise dress, signed and dated 1935 on the backing to the support, ivory, oval, 9. 5 x 7cm, giltmetal frame in morocco covered triptych . In excellent condition, the ivory undamage and with no sign of warping, the colours very well preserved having been kept in an enclosed triptych case, the leather covering to the exterior of the case scuffed and torn in one place with small loss.
