Ï’An early Victorian silver baluster coffee pot by Joseph Angell I & Joseph Angell II, London 1843, with a bud and leaf finial to the flat cover, a high angular loop handle with ivory spacers issuing from shellwork, the body engraved with an armorial, crest and motto Ostendo, non ostento, within a scroll and trellis reserve, 24cm (9 1/2in) high, 791g (25.4 oz) gross The arms motto and crest for BETTS of Preston Hall, Aylesford, Kent impaling PETO. Edward Ladd Betts (1815-1872) was a civil engineer and railway contractor, who worked in the Betts family business assuming control in 1845 on the retirement of his father. It was in 1848 that he purchased the Preston Hall and estate. He was the son of William Betts (1790-1867) by Elizabeth Haywood. In 1843 he married Ann PETO (1821-1908) the daughter of William and Sophia Peto and cousin of Samuel Morton PETO (1809-1899) who was created in 1855 the 1st Baronet of Somerleyton Hall. In 1848 the family business of Betts and Peto established a partnership and later projects included work in Canada and on the Grand Crimean Railway. The partnership was declared bankrupt in 1866 and as a result of Ill-health he travelled to Aswan in Egypt, where he died, being buried in Aylesford, Kent. Ï’ indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Ï’An early Victorian silver meat or venison dish by William Bateman, London 29th May- 20th June 1837, shaped oval with a shell, foliage and gadrooned rim, a well-and-tree and an applied latticework strainer, engraved with a presentation inscription, two crests and a motto Duw a diwedd da, 4752g (152.8 oz); and an old Sheffield plate hot water stand, on four ivory bun feet with turned ivory handles, 63.5cm (25in) long, the stand 70.5cm long Provenance: A gentleman; Christie's London, 25th October 1989, lot 202. The inscription reads: In the Year 1839 Richard Lloyd Edwards Esqre. Of Nanhoron completed a long line of Road through Nant Bodlas, solely at his own expense, and generously dedicated the same to the use of the Public. By the formation of this new line sundry long and steep hills on the road leading to the market town of Pwllheli were avoided. In Testimony of their Approval of his Public Spirit and of their Regard. This piece of Plate was Presented by the Proprietors of Land and Resident Gentry of Lleyn on the 2nd Day of March 1840. The arms are those of Wynne and Lloyd for Richard Lloyd Edwards of Nanhoron, co. Caernarfon and his wife Mary, only daughter of John Lloyd Wynne of Coed Coch, co. Denbigh, whom he married on 7th November 1831. Richard Lloyd Edwards (1806-1876) was a stalwart conservative and churchman, a deputy lieutenant of Caernarvonshire, high sheriff at various times of three Welsh counties and in the forefront of the public life of his native county in the middle decades of the 19th century. Ï’ indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Width 120 cm, height 117 cm, depth 57 cm.

A Canton carved ivory card case, circa 1880, with serpentine sides, each side with a carved vignette of figures, buildings and pine trees, one vignette with cartouche with engraved initials "CW", 88.5 grams. 10.8 cm x 6.9 cm wide. CONDITION REPORT: Looking at the lid there are very fine hairline cracks along the front and back right hand side edges. There are one or two very small flea bites along the edge but nothing too significant. Looking at the case there is a very small and fine 3 mm hairline crack at the top right of the front of the case. On the reverse there is a very fine 3 mm hairline crack running across the top left hand corner and down the side and front of the case. There are no obvious major chips or other cracks notable. There are no signs of any repairs or restorations. The lid is tight fitting to the body. The ivory is slightly discoloured. There are some small flea bite nicks to the edges but these are not visible to the naked eye.

A Canton carved ivory card case, circa 1880, carved throughout with figures, buildings amongst flowers, pine and prunus trees, one side with vacant oval cartouche, 31.3 grams. 8.5 cm x 4.6 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a small chip to the bottom right hand corner of the card case cap, otherwise the cap is in good decorative order. There is a small chip to the top right hand corner on the reverse of the case. Looking at the front of the case showing the interior lip, the right hand side of the lip is slightly smaller than the left hand side, this may have been done in production. The remainder of the case appears to be in good decorative order throughout with no signs of obvious chips, cracks or restorations.

An early 20th century portrait miniature of a lady with a lapdog, all within a piano ivory frame. Overall 13.5 cm x 11.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a 2.8 cm horizontal fine split to the top right-hand panel. There is a 1 cm fine horizontal split to the bottom right-hand panel. There are two small splits to the bottom left-hand panel, all of these should be visible on our website. Looking closely at the lapdog it looks like some of the white gouache on its forehead is missing but on close inspection this seems to be deliberate. Generally in good order with but a few faults.
