An amusing ivory Group of Jofuku,early 20th century, the stocky magician riding a donkey and holding his huge black woven straw hat, his left hand with a pearl and wearing textured green trousers, oval base, engraved Hidenao,15cmJofuku, originally Chinese (Su She) went in search of the Fortunate Islands of the Eastern Seas, whose spring waters conferred immortality (hence the pearl) although he failed to find them. It may be that wrapped up in the legend are the attempts by the Chinese to colonise the Islands of Japan.

A fine Shibayama Vase and Cover,c.1880, each side with a silver-edged panel of Daikoku's mallet or Hotei leaning on his bag, the sides with silver chrysanthemum handles, the flat cover with karakusa scrolls and florets on which sits a monkey in a jacket holding a gilt peach above a cloud collar on the shoulders, all on an ivory stand carved with scrolls and leaves, lid chip,12.3cm (2)The Japanese preferred their silver to tarnish naturally and not to polish it. In fact, they imitated the tarnish with an amalgam of copper, gold and other metals which produced a black lacquer-like finish.
