An exceptionally large Chinese export ivory figural chess set, early 19th century Canton, the white King and Queen modelled as George III and Queen Charlotte, the red stained side modelled as Imperial Rulers, the Bishops as Mandarins, the Knights on horseback, the Rooks as elephants surmounted by Mahouts and turrets, the Pawns as foot-soldiers, king h.13.5cm, pawn h.7cm, in later gilt tooled fitted leather games board box in the form of a book, the interior with velvet compartment Condition Report / Extra Information White set - one pawn with hairline to base, one pawn with hairlines to shield, one castle on elephant missing small house on top, queen with 1cm hairline to back, some minor staining and hairlines throughout.Red set - one pawn head very well re-stuck, one pawn gun chipped at rifle tip, one pawn probably replacement (inferior carving), kind missing sword, some very minor frits / chips throughout. Basically and very good example.
