The central medallion filled with cranes and deer; the field with all over animals and birds of field, forest and jungle playing among flowering trees; a pale green dragon at the base of each pair of cypress trees; a lion cub peering out of the indigo medallion in each ivory pendant; the pale pink spandrels each woven with two whirling dervishes; dark red palmette and floral main border within ivory floral guards. A superb carpet finely woven in a soft palette and in ready to use condition. See front cover.

Slight wear in places; lacking the flatweave finish at the top end. The red/rose field with pale gold inscription cartouche above the central indigo and pale gold medallion; pale green spandrels. Wonderful spatial all over design of angular flowers and foliage enlivened by the occasional amusing bird. Small ivory inscription octagons in the top right and lower left spandrels; red/rose main border with indigo and pale gold guards. Lustrous, velvety wool and relatively soft handle. Provenance: Purchased by the present owner in the early 1990s from the well-known carpet specialists, R. L. Rose and Company of Glasgow. The original receipt is available to view in the office.

The light terracotta silk ground embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads depicting an ivory silk embroidered elephant in ceremonial dress transporting a vase of auspicious objects with attendant bats on his back, surrounded by flowers and foliage and garden scenes. All within a silk brocaded border and lined with pale blue silk. Shattering to the silk ground and with some water marks.

The four gush pattern panels divided by horizontal band of govacha gul design with narrow ivory borders and frame to the inner field; mihrab arch flanked by latticed motifs; wide main border with a variation of the kelle motif with sainak motif outer border to three sides; lower elem of small trellised geometric design. Finely woven with lustrous, velvety wool and soft handle. Cf. Tzareva, E. Rugs & Carpets from Central Asia, The Russian Collection, pp. 67-68, pl. 34 for an almost identical example.

Pair of Yomut Turkmen asmalyks, Turkmenistan, early 20th century, each 2ft. X 3ft. 8in. 0.61m. X 1.12m. All over askik design; ivory main border to three sides degenerating to a narrow stripe at the top. Tiered woollen fringing (a few missing) to lower edges; woollen braiding to all edges with three plaited ties to the top edges. (2)

Overall wear; damage to one end. The second a Karakalpak napramach, north west Uzbekistan, late 19th/early 20th century, 4ft. 3in. X 1ft. 6in. 1.30m. X 0.46m. Overall wear with 'bites' to sides and losses to ends. The two end panels are either joined on or have been seamed to fold back; both appear to be related to the main weaving being of the same colour, weave and design. (2)

Tekke Turkmen 4 x 12 gul carpet, Turkmenistan, circa 1910-1920s, 9ft. X 5ft. 11in. 2.75m. X 1.80m. Overall even wear; uneven fading to small area of pile fifth minor gul from the lower end on the right hand side. Wide undyed wool flatweave ends, the top left corner with plaited tie; both ends with narrow ivory piled stripe. Four columns of twelve guls divided by minor chuval guls within a uriuk (apricot blossom) main border; both elems decorated with the dogdan motif.

Yomut Turkmen flatweave ok bash, (tent pole cover) Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 20in. Long x 12in. Wide at the base, 51cm. X 30cm. Tiered woollen tassels to the pointed end. Bound opening to one side. Small repairs. Zigzag design in a good palette including bottle green, ivory, earthy red, apricot and a dark blue. Cf. MacDonald, B. Tribal Rugs. Treasures of the Black Tent, p. 48, pl 15 for a very similar ok bash.

Good Yomut Turkmen ensi, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 5ft. X 4ft. 9in. 1.52m. X 1.45m. Overall even wear. Lustrous, velvety wool with soft handle and good, varied palette. Note the inner 'curled leaf' border repeated in the central vertical bar, the four panels framed by an ivory 'syrga' motif border on all four sides; the lower elem with a band of gapyrga motifs below a band of quartered and step sided guls. Cf. Jourdan, U. Op cit, pp. 189-191, pls. 145-147 for similar examples with the curled leaf border.
