An early 19th century portrait miniature of a young man with a kite, watercolour on ivory, wearing a dark blue tunic and white shirt with broad collar, red neckerchief and tam o'shanter, holding a twine bale, his kite on his back, in an ebonised frame, 3¼ x 2 5/8in. (8.2 x 6.7cm.), split to ivory., * Condition: Vertical split to ivory for approx. 2/3 of height, approx. 1.2cm. from bottom left corner. Otherwise good - top left corner is predominantly white with a few brush strokes to edges - appears to be the sun, rather than an area of wear. Modern paper pasted verso with handwritten notes by owner, on top of the original backing paper.

A fascinating collection of great nauticalia and historical geographical interest, the collection compiled by Dr. F.A. Phillipps an eminent ships surgeon of the early 20th century and offered for sale by way of descendancy through Dr. Phillipps son, to include a collection of artifacts acquired in Tonga and the Cook Islands comprising of particular note a rectangular cut from a bolt of British scarlet cloth taken to Tonga by Captain James Cook for repairs to uniforms, gifted to Dr. Phillipps by Tugi the Prince consort to the Queen of Tonga, with gift label signed 'U. Tugi, With Compliments' in envelope with annotated history to front, 4¼ x 2in. (10.8 x 5.1cm.), a whales tooth having a darkened patina and bearing lightly inscribed lettering and decoration, 6½ x3in.(16.5 x 7.6cm.), a coconut half shell cup (Kava Bilo) 4 x 2in.(10.2 x 5.1cm.), a single ivory nut, 2 x 1½in.(5.1 x 3.8cm.), a Solomon Island bamboo lime box, probably originating from the island of Vatapura, of cylinder form with detachable sliding lid bearing turreted design to top, the exterior with etched geometric design infilled with charcoal, used to hold lime of which was to be ingested in conjuction with the chewing of Betel nuts, 6¼in. (15.9cm.) height, also included as part of this are two photographic albums compiled during his tenure as Ships Doctor for Ernest Guinness on his world tour aboard Fantôme II from March 29th, 1923 till March 2th, 1924, setting sail from Southampton, and visiting Sevilla,Las Palmas, Saint-Vincent, Trinidad, La Guaira - Caracas, Colón, Panamá, Galápagos, the Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Suva-Viti Levu, Salomon, Caroline Islands,Shimizu, Osaka, Tien-Tsin, Shangai, Hongkong, Singapour, Penang, Colombo,Aden, Port-Saïd, Crete, Gibraltar before returning to Southampton a total of 31,129 miles was covered in the course of the journey, the albums depict a candid account of the journey, of particalur note are detailed photographs showing the devastation in Yokohama following the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, various photographs of tribesmen and women, a photographic account of Swordfish capture and Whale hunting, Captain Cooks Tortoise with burned shell, many topographical photographs, a quantity of postcards brought during his travels from Tahiti, Kyoto, Kobe etc, Earthquake Pictorial Edition book published by The Osaka Mainichi book, a mounted photograph of Dr. Phillips aboard the Fantôme II amongst assorted dignitaries and other crew members along with a glazed framed photograph of Fantôme II in full mast sailing off Cowes captured by renowned photographers Becken and son of Cowes, all held in an adapted mahogany print box also form part of this eclectic lot.
