A Claviorganum by Merlin, London, 1784 The mahogany case cross-banded with satinwood and inlaid with multiple fruitwood stringing, on a detachable stand, cross-banded and inlaid in the same manner and raised on four square tapered legs with stretchers, all veneered en suite. The keywell veneered in satinwood, cross-banded in kingwood and inlaid with chevron stringing, the nameboard bearing a circular enamelled plaque inscribed: MERLIN, PRINCES STREET, HANOVER SQUARE, No 2. The five octave keyboard FF-f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English single action with over-dampers. The detachable stand containing a single rank of 8-foot stopped wooden organ pipes. The lowest pipe signed: R & W Gray 31st January 1784. The organ is blown by means of a central pedal, but an electric blower is sold with this lot. A hand-stop controls the piano's dampers, and a true una-corda is obtained by shifting the keyboard towards the player. Further stops allow the piano and the organ each to be played alone or to be combined. Width 153cm, depth 56cm, total height including lid 87cm. The keywell in figured walnut with geometrical inlay work, with a similarly decorated name batten bearing a rectangular boxwood plaque inscribed: Joseph Mahoon London. The five octave keyboards FF/ GG-f3. Ivory naturals and moulded boxwood fronts, with ebony and ivory skunk-tail accidentals. Dated 1738 on the upper keyboard & 1742 on the lower one, also signed: Broom Smith 1738 on a key. A paper label on the underside of the front lid section giving indications of the registration combinations. Two eight-foot stops, one four-foot stop and a harp stop controlled by four brass-knobbed stop levers. Length 248cm, width 94cm, case height including lid 29.5cm. A grand piano by Clementi, London, circa 1812 The cross-banded mahogany case inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing, raised on four turned and reeded legs. The keywell veneered in satinwood with ebony and boxwood stringing and cross-banded in rosewood, surmounted by a gilt metal moulding to the top of the nameboard. A gilt medallion flanked by foliate gilt scrollwork on the nameboard inscribed: CLEMENTI & Co, LONDON. Stamped: Clementi & Co on the wrestplank and: 409. Six octave keyboard FF-f4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Divided bridge. A console piano by Pape, Paris, 1840 The burr elm case with a fretwork gallery over the wrestpins. A burr elm cross-banded panel under the keyboard flanked by a pair of scrolling X-frame supports. The rosewood inlaid and satinwood cross-banded nameboard bearing a central inscription: Pape, Paris & Londres, and flanked each side with inscriptions detailing 1st prizes won in 1838. There are three music rests above the nameboard, the central one inscribed: PAPE facture de Pianos du ROI. PIANO CONSOLE BREVET D'INVENTION. The interior of the rosewood veneered fall board decorated with floral brass inlay and bearing a boxwood plaque inscribed: Patent, John Broadwood & Sons, Makers to His Majesty & the Princesses, Great Pulteney Street, Golden Square, London. Six and a half octave keyboard CC-f4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action. Two pedals, mounted on a lyre, controlling dampers and keyboard shift. The Patent on the nameboard refers to Patent No. 5485 registered by Broadwood on April 9th 1827. This instrument is constructed with the brass "string plate" and four iron bars of this patent. A double-manual harpsichord by Tull, London, circa 1935 The antiqued painted case, with floral motifs within gold banding all on a black ground. The inner lid painted with a pastiche Italianate scene. Raised on a painted scalloped frame stand with seven cabriole legs. The painted keywell decorated with foliate and floral designs bearing a gilded name batten inscribed: HENRICVS TVLL FECIT LONDINI. The music desk, bearing a paper reproduction of the harpsichord name batten, sold with this lot. The separate cross-banded and inlaid harpsichord name batten inscribed: Baker Harris Londini fecit 1780.The five octave keyboards FF-f3 with ebony naturals, boxwood arcades and ivory accidentals. An upright combined barrel piano by Henderson, London, circa 1825 The rosewood case inlaid with foliate brass decoration surmounted by a swan-neck cornice with a cast gilt metal frieze. The panel beneath the keyboard with a similar gilt moulding. The pleated silk panel above the keyboard surrounded by a cast gilt metal moulding. The keywell in rosewood inlaid with a simple brass stringing, the nameboard bearing a rectangular plaque between gilded floral tendrils inscribed: Henderson. Little James Street Bedford Row London. An anonymous Clavecin Royal, Germany, circa 1785 The oak case raised on four square tapered legs. The later oak cross-banded lid with an inner painting depicting Glenarm Castle. The plain oak nameboard bearing a later paper label inscribed: Johann Gottlob, Wagner. In Dresden. The five octave keyboard FF-f3 with ebony naturals with arcaded fronts and ivory capped accidentals. Stossmechanik action with under-dampers. At the bass end of the keywell a curved brass lever controlling the dampers and a stop-knob, once probably operating a missing harp-stop. Provenance: Multiple entries for this piano have been found in Broadwood Porters' books held at the Surrey History Centre: First sold 3rd November 1846 to Miss Foster. The second owner, Mrs. Merest, owned it through many house moves from 29th July 1847 to 12th May 1875. From the latter date Broadwoods stored it until it was released by her executors on 22nd May 1890 and sold again.

A square piano by Clementi, London, circa 1821 The mahogany case cross-banded in rosewood with a simple fruitwood stringing, the canted corners inlaid with brass foliate patterns. Two cast gilt metal mouldings run above and around the perimeter of the rosewood veneered skirting. Raised on six turned and reeded legs with engraved brass collars, three cross-banded drawers with brass handles beneath the skirting. The keywell in rosewood with brass inlay, the nameboard with two pierced panels, at its centre a crown above a gilt rectangular plaque flanked by foliate gilt scrollwork inscribed: Imperial Patent, CLEMENTI & COMPY LONDON. The six octave keyboard CC-c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. Double action with mop-stick over-dampers. Two pedals operate the dampers and the 'Bridge of harmonic swell and reverberation'. A paper label gives: DIRECTIONS for the USE of the PEDALS.
