A SET OF SIX REGENCY BRASS MOUNTED DINING CHAIRS^ THE PAINTED DECORATION ATTRIBUTED TO OLIVER MESSEL (1904-1978) the back rail with rope handle and delicately painted with stylised flowers in pink^ blue and green on an ivory ground^ on sabre legs with caned seat and a set of three elbow chairs painted to match^ 82-86cm h^ both early 19th c and later (9) Oliver Messel~s painted Regency caned dining chairs remain in their original setting at Flaxley Abbey and it is probable that the present chairs^ removed from the attics^ were intended for another room. What is certain^ however^ is that the skilful decoration almost certainly executed by Oliver Messel^ is identifiable in some of his most important schemes of the 1950s^ such as the interiors of the Dorchester Hotel and Rayne~s shoe salon in Old Bond Street. ++Flaking paint^ localised worm and repairs^ generally heavily encrusted with dirt and grime and showing the effects of longterm storage in a dusty/damp environment but highly decorative and unrestored.
