Late Period, 664-332 BC. A carved bone figure of a nude female with arched back, hands clasped on the groin, hair dressed in a chignon. 3.25 grams, 52mm (2"). From an early 20th century collection. The shape of this piece indicates that the lower legs were held in the hands so that the figure arches upwards into a straight pose. This is very similar to Egyptian ivory and bone wands that were used in birthing rituals to aid the mother and unborn child at this difficult and dangerous time. A number of bone and ivory female figures have been found in domestic contexts at sites across Egypt and an apotropaic role would be the most obvious as many have been found close to household shrines associated with birthing rituals.
