1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda with HardtopChassis no. 113.044-12-016040Engine no. 130.980-12-068672Offered fresh from extensive restoration, this lovely automatic transmission Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is believed to be a Europe-delivered example that like many others later found its way to the USA. The car's early history is unknown: the earliest paperwork dates from around 2004 when the car was registered in Miami to a Mr Ray Lancer. At that time the car was beige with a dark brown interior. Between 2004 and 2015, the Mercedes had just the one owner, and since 2004 has been very well documented. In 2015, the car was sold to the current Belgian owner who had it shipped to Belgium where a lengthy and painstaking professional restoration was commenced that same year. Works carried out include body restoration, full re-spray, fresh chrome, re-trimmed interior, new soft-top, engine and mechanicals overhauled. Upon arrival in Belgium from the USA, the car was found to have a km/h speedometer, which led the vendor to believe it had been delivered in Europe but with USA-specification headlamps (in the process of restoration these were converted to EU-specification). With hardly any distance travelled since its professional restoration - only finished in 2021 - the car presents beautifully in a handsome combination of dark blue with beige interior, the latter featuring the lovely ivory-coloured steering wheel. We have had the pleasure of driving the car over a short distance and are happy to confirm it drives well, with an engine that revs willingly and is very responsive on the throttle. (Usually 280 SLs tend to be a bit lazy, but this one is remarkably quick.) Also of note are the original spot-welds, clearly visible on both inner front wings, while the body number is evident on the top left corner of the bonnet. As one would expect, the engine bay is clean.EU taxes paid, the car comes with an old US Title dated 2004; numerous invoices and correspondence for the period 2004-2015; invoices relating to its recent restoration where over €70,000 was spent; and an owner's manual.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Chassis no. 304311A 'modern classic' if ever there was one, Porsche's long-running 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901', but shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3.0 litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower. Delivered new to Glöckler in Frankfurt, Germany, this lovely example left the factory finished in hellelfenbeinweiss (light ivory white) with red leather interior, the same colour combination it has today. Chassis number '304311' is an early, short-wheelbase car of the type much favoured by the historic rallying fraternity, a situation that has led to unmodified examples such as this one becoming a great rarity. A desirable sunroof model with the five-speed dogleg gearbox, the Porsche was first registered 6th May 1966 to a Mr Ernst Nohl in Darmstadt. The accompanying copy of the Porsche Kardex lists the factory options including the highly desirsable sunroof and records Glöckler's services up to 1967 at 13,000 kilometres. The 911's subsequent history in Germany remains vague but the car later made its way to Denmark where it was bought by the current owner in 2013 as a restoration project. The owner had the Porsche extensively restored by marque specialists RSC Automobile in Lauwe, Belgium, and since the rebuild's completion the car has covered fewer than 1,500 kilometres. The engine, a correct type 901/05 unit, is stamped with the engine number *90754* as mentioned on the Porsche Kardex. RSC's invoices are on file and the car also comes with Belgian registration documents; Contrôle Technique valid until 2026; and a summary of restoration expenditure totalling €102,000.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1937 Jaguar SS 2½-Litre Drophead CoupéRegistration no. TI 162 138Chassis no. 46001Engine no. L89• Première voiture produite • Le seul cabriolet 2½-Litre à carrosserie traditionnelle • Livrée neuve en Hollande• Aux mains du propriétaire depuis 1988• First car of the production line • The only coachbuilt 2½-Litre Drophead Coupé• Delivered new to the Netherlands• Present ownership since 1988Footnotes:1937 SS Jaguar 2½-Litre cabriolet prototype Châssis n° 46001Moteur n° L89En 1936, le nouveau moteur six cylindres de 2 663 cm3 à soupapes en tête de SS Cars, développé par Weslake, apparut sur deux nouveaux modèles : la berline 2½-Litre et la sportive SS 100. L89In 1936, SS Cars' new Weslake-developed, overhead-valve, 2,663cc, six-cylinder power unit appeared in two new models: the 2½-Litre saloon and SS 100 sports car. The introduction of the OHV engine was considered to justify the adoption of a new name for the series, SS Cars' boss William Lyons later recalling: 'I immediately pounced on Jaguar as it had an exciting sound to me.' ('Jaguar' would be adopted as the marque name in 1943, 'SS' having by then acquired a somewhat tarnished reputation.) With 104bhp on tap from the twin-carburettor 'six', the newcomers' performance at last matched the style that had already become a company hallmark. Moving away from coachbuilt manufacturing, SS introduced a new version of the saloon with an all-steel body for 1938, and at the same time added a drophead coupé to the range, replacing the previous open tourer. The car offered here, chassis number '46001' is the prototype for the 2½-Litre drophead coupe and is the only car of the series built using traditional coachbuilding techniques, the others having all-steel bodies. This prototype 2½-Litre drophead was manufactured on 14th October 1937 and on 17th January 1938 was despatched to the distributor Lagerwijs in The Hague, Holland. The car left the factory finished in Ivory with Pigskin interior trim and Dark Sandalwood hood (see JDHT certificate and other paperwork on file). After WW2, the prototype was registered in Switzerland on 1st December 1947 as 'VD 11317' in the name of Count Bernard De Mandrat in Echichens (Lausanne). The current vendor, the car's third owner, purchased it on 7th October 1988 in Aigle (Vaud). He then embarked upon a complete restoration, which would end up taking some 15 years and was only completed in the 2000s. The process was lengthened by the need to remake many components by hand, including the entire wooden body frame. It is worthwhile noting that the engine has never been opened and consequently remains totally original. Since its completion this historic SS Jaguar has been widely displayed at prestigious concours events in Switzerland and elsewhere, winning many awards, and has been featured in various motoring magazines (see file). Currently registered in Switzerland, this beautiful SS 2½-Litre drophead coupé prototype represents a unique opportunity to own and enjoy an important part of the Jaguar legend. Please note that if this vehicle remains within France the reduced rate of Import VAT at 5.5% will be charged on the hammer price.
