A good Chinese ivory carved figure, 17th century. Probably of Wen Chang, the God of literature, standing holding his belt and wearing long flowing robes, his hat and sleeves with dark stain, 15.3cm, and a modern wood stand. (2) Cf. A Chinese bamboo and ivory perfume holder, 17th/18th century. The cylindrical body carved with figures at leisure in buildings, beneath prunus and beside a bamboo grove, the borders with key fret bands, one end pierced, 20.3cm. (2) Cf. A massive Japanese ivory temple, 19th century. The exterior deeply carved with panels of figures, including Buddha beneath a pine tree, the reverse with numerous immortals and animals, the octagonal top carved with lotus, dragons and further figures, the central section with doors opening to reveal a standing Boddhisattva with four attendants before a large incense burner, all raised on a elaborately carved wood stand, damages and losses, 82cm including the stand.
